Have you ever been hit on the unmentionables?
Any self- respecting cricketer would have at least one story to recount. However, my favourite story does not involve me, but a friend who invariably wore a lungi while playing and had the gumption to ignore our pleas to wear trousers.
So here is the story of how my 'lungi' friend learnt a lesson.
That day due to strained financial circumstances we were playing with a totally bald tennis ball. BTW, there was also a light drizzle which invariably made a bald tennis ball heavy. As you all know an experienced chucker can make a wet tennis ball talk. We decided that it was the right sort day to teach our 'lungi' friend the ill- effects of wearing it.
Therefore, when it was the turn of our lungi friend to bat we brought on a bowler who specialised in bowling off-breaks. Not only did his off-spinners turn it also had an unerring capacity to find the batsman's thigh.
The conditions were just right for some cherry picking.
As luck would have it, the very first ball cut back sharply, caught the inside edge and somehow found its way inside the lungi.
You can easily imagine the mayhem it caused. The 'lungi' player lay writhing on the ground and despite our best efforts we had a tough time separating the 'man' from the tennis ball.
Needless to add he learnt his lesson.
ha ha ha... separating the man from the tennis ball... things also indicate lack of inner wear and a stinky ball :)
ReplyDeletethats what we call cricket with 'balls'... hahaha...
ReplyDeleteBTW my experience is bit different...
ReplyDeleteis was that only one 'guard' was left and only me and my partner could wear it...
me being small frame (i was in 10th and he was in 12th standard) he said you need it much more than him which i willingly accepted without even fake argument...like no...pls take it...
it happened this way that when i played my trademark straight drive the ball hit on his crouch one tip and he was on floor like uprooted tree...remains silent for a while and we all feared worst...its only after few breathleass second he did screamed and we along with our coach (PT teacher) heaved a sigh of releif...
wasn't funny but still imprinted in memory like happened yesterday...
--------
we are onto something boss...if only we keep momentum going...already 'talked' and 'listened' cricket like never before here...feeling fresh and rejuvenated...
nice one Ott.. I had to face the pain myself once.. but not in cricket.. but in soccer..
ReplyDeleteGood form Ott. propose you be christened Ottrageous from here on.
ReplyDeletelike trideep, recall the soccer blows too -the surface area of impact is far greater, and boy does it surface fast.
the wet t ball is a wiper esp on concrete. gotta attack them, no use staying back.
why was h sticking to the tennis ball...does he wan to outnumber the ball(s)
ReplyDeleteGuys,
ReplyDeleteI had my fair share. But the blow I remember was the one I took on the nose from an errant football.
My mother had to revived as she fainted seeing the blood on my white shirt.(uniform)
i don't remember any distinct event that happened with the "balls", but then there were far too many to remember.. i was a horrible fielder and that hurt, really! (guess i am more than a self respecting cricketer then, Ott)
ReplyDeletewhat i really remember is the standard routine after being hit, or while providing the same instructions..
the routine:
take deep breaths, in and out!! like there was a third way, oh yeah there was, something else was throbbing besides the heart..
the standard hissing sounds..
and that relieving of pain...
forget the cricket ball, once my dog was looking at something outside, got excited and wagged her tail. I was standing behind her and she took my marbles to the cleaners.
ReplyDeleteNeedless to say I collapsed like the Indian middle order.
the t ball went in the water today. but we were playing on grass. alas. still the bowler was excited at the possibilities: it'll spin he said.
ReplyDeleteI have inflicted this pain to many with my deadly in dipper only experienced the blow once and that was in soccer.
ReplyDeleteI wonder why women complain so much that while giving birth they have to suffer the most pain, I guess since they have no balls they have no Idea what men have to go through! lol
wasim,
ReplyDeletea big fan of chandler??
chandlerism: no one can say what is more painful, going through labours or being kicked in your balls, of course, since no one can experience both!
