No canned laughter

by Gaurav Sethi

Usually, I don’t do conferences, they do me. But when it’s Sehwag, know I’m due.

Sehwag at Shangri-La, another award show, cricinfo this time.

So, what does Viru say? Not much, but worth a listen.

On when he didn’t make the England tour his wife told him while watching a game, "we could have been watching in London, but we’re watching in Nasafgarh." Straight faced.

No canned laughter.

On 3 bowlers that trouble him, named only two. McGrath and Murali - how he didn’t read Murali’s Doosra.

But yet he scored through covers when Murali had a 6 man on-side field. ‘thought he was bowling the doosra when was bowling an offspinner’. Straight faced.

No canned laughter.

On preparation: When Kirsten bowled on to his legs, asked him to ‘hit me (with the ball)’ and he was ‘playing shot’

On family life: son plays with two bats, takes one bat from his cousin sis, and Sehwag bowls to the two batted kid. Straight faced

No canned laughter.

Sehwag’s awards: test batting performance of the year 201* v Lanka, 2nd test, Galle. Batting pair of the year (tests) Sehwag+Gambhir, Most % runs in boundaries (tests+ODI), Highest strike rate (tests+ODI), Funny guy.

For Bored Member Som’s take.

No canned laughter. Genuine

Sehwag on being the top test side: “it’s easier to get on top than to sustain your stay on top as the winds are fierce up there on top"

best strike rate in ODIs too and being the most destructive batsmen in all forms of the game in the world today!!

Sustaining your stay on the top where the winds are fierce is even harder when you've got a thinning mop on top!!!

SP, Sehwag's a Straight Point too.

Sehwag could have been much more than what he is today...I remember in the early days they used to compare his stance and play with Sachin and so much was similar...

I think he did lose his way in the middle somewhere but seems like finding his groove now...

Hi ASF, True, he did lose his way, but doesn't that happen with most careers?

They used his ODI form as a benchmark, and did him in the tests. Dumbest thing Indian cricket did in a long time - meanwhile the likes of Jaffer scored big on flattracks. But for Dravid, he wasn't backed much.

Sehwag's career halt slowed Indian cricket. Sure, Dada-SRT had to open.

Sam, wasn't he always? Even when MSD and YS were supposedly the big strikers, Viru's strikerate (in tests and ODIs) overshot them by a distance.

For some reason, the media 'n selectors, went on about his ODI Avg - was down to the early 30s. Even compared it with Dada's high ODI avg. Never once, the strike rate. Mail you an earlier piece on Viru.
