Why is Bangladesh still a Test playing nation?

by K

Bangladesh's record in Test matches reads - 59 matches, 1 win, 6 draws, 52 losses. Their solitary win was registered in Jan 2005 against a depleted Zimbabwean team at Chittagong.

Zimbabwe have been their opponents in three of their six drawn matches.

Losses by less than 200 runs: 2

Losses by less than 6 wickets: 4

Our very own BCCI was instrumental in getting Bangladesh elevated to Test status and interestingly the same board has not hosted a series for them even once since November 2000 when they entered the Test arena (perhaps they do not consider them worthy opponents for a home series due to their dismal record).

Now, isn't it time to relegate Bangladesh from Test status.

If the last line was aimed at me then I would like to say that I am just trying to put across my point of view, and not trying to score a win :)

I have no problem accepting if I am proved wrong..

test cricket anyway facing lots of challenge and is fighting for survival...the last thing at this stage you want is a terribly one sided test series...

ban them...or relegate them to lower tier...

Well, I have a reason for Bangladesh to be a Test nation. It's called Shakib-al-hasan. It would be an unfair world where Andrew McDonald, Nathan Hauritz, Marcus North, Aaron Redmond, James Franklin, Ian Bell, myriad West Indian dunces, Yuvraj Singh, Shoaib Malik, Isiru Udana, Paul Harris, Johan Botha, myriad New Zealand openers are all test players but Shakib isnt.
Case closed.

except nz...all other players enjoy the company of some serious test players which shakib doesn't...

case opened...? ;-))

Megha,

Was just trying to be naughty in the last line. Nothing more to it than that. Have anyway removed it now.

Nice one Raj... and good retort SP.

Barring the 8 test playing nations, do any of the other ones (Ire, Kenya, Zim etc) play any test cricket at all? I can't see any such records on Cricinfo..

If they don't, then how do we expect them to play good cricket once they qualify as a test playing nation?

But I do agree that Bangladesh has been playing for a while now and needs to step up..their record is worse than SL's in their inital years..

and K, you didn't have to remove that line...I can take a joke as well, honest! :)

Hi all , I believe ICC hurried up a bit to grant Test status to Bangladesh considering the fact that cricket can be mighty popular in the overpopulated country . Having said that I put the blame equaly on the Team as a whole to failed to raise the game to the next level. IMHO the only way to pull them up is to strip off theur status for couple of years till they step up . In the mean time if they do not show character in the ODI and domestic circuit , their band should be made permanent from tests .
Let me know if you have any diff of opinion. BTW a very valid point raised by SP and infact the ICC and the others were sulking away for this discussion . the current FTP needs India to plan 2 tours to bangladesh before 2012 but since it does nto make any financial sense they have kep quiet ;)isnt it ?

I blame Inzi for bANGLadesh's sad state. Had he not won that lost test for Pak, Bangla cricket would have won 2 tests, and who knows how many after that.

And yeah, that first test we played versus them, they sure ran us close.

Ashraful as skipper was a bad call, not only did they lose their only A player, they were doomed to become a B side forever. That's the ABC of Bangla cricket.

Agree with K. BD dont deserve to be a Test nation. We were pathetic in 30s, 40s and 50s but we still threw occasional good players and won something, but this lads just dont win anything. lose with horrible consistency that woud put even our poor Rohit Bhaiya to shame.

Only thing BD do is to give few cheap records to the teams they play frequently against.

And just to watch a Shaqib we have to go through the torture of seeing entire Deshis, then i believe its not worth.

Bahut naainsaafi hogi.
