WADA, Indian cricketers, dope testing, rave parties and cocaine

by Gaurav Sethi

By a Mail Today Correspondent - "World cricket is littered with instances of players risking everything by indulging in substance abuse. Be it Ian Botham being suspended for smoking cannabis in 1986, Pakistani pacers Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis charged with marijuana possession during their tour to the West Indies in 1993 or more recently Mohammed Asif being caught at the Dubai airport with a small amount of opium, there is a dark side to cricket. It would be foolish to believe that Indian cricketers would remain untouched by its allure.

There are players who are known to organise rave parties where drugs like cocaine flow freely. And it is because of this reason that their insistence on not signing the WADA anti-doping code raises a few eyebrows. Are our cricketers afraid of getting caught because some of them like to walk on the wild side of life? Are they taking synthetic drugs to help them recover from injuries faster?

Maybe it's time to call a spade a spade.

SP, remember what Warne's mummy gave him one World Cup - it's a very thin line, sports and drugs are strange bed fellahs

Naresh, that's one helluva question. Mail Today has not credited this story to anyone, it's basically to finger. I wonder whether they will take it further or if they can - expect the electronic media to shoot on this very soon.

Right. Lets just throw muck at our players instead of acknowledging that this stupid regime has been totally unable to stop drugs in sports. Oh right, Michael Phelps is really a genetic freak unlike any other in history - wait his world record stood for what 12 months barely? Another genetic freak. and another. and another.
WADA is fucking intrusive. Its a stupid bureaucracy that having come into being must come up with more and more complex regulations to self-justify. The only thing it does is give a hidden advantage to athletes from developed countries because their drugs are a step ahead of the tests. As long as WADA exists Phelps and other Americans and Germans and Australians are guaranteed medals and endorsement deals which in turn keep Nike, Adidas and Reebok in business.
