rahul dravid will be our opener in champions trophy...

by straight point

unless he messes up big time that is...

the vibes i get from team india's camp are that they have more or less decided that rahul dravid will open for a while... gambhir is back after a groin injury and a layoff of two and a half months... and even if he does play against pakistan on the 26th... india's first match... he will come one down... or if the start is good dhoni...

india is looking at either sachin or dravid to carry on till at least the 40th over with a battery of dashers around these gents... so one of sachin or dravid will bat thru the innings not worrying too much about the strike rate so the powers of yuvraj, dhoni, raina can be unleashed at the other end...

the task for batsmen is cut out they will not only have to score but score big to make leeway for the wayward bowling that has crept up as well as the india-gate kinda fielding... so the thinking seems to be: keep wickets in hand and utilize the last 10-15 overs big time...

tho i would like dhoni to think out of the box and play two front line spinners when it’s very clear that seam bowlers have lost their mind as well as direction... the grounds in south africa are not that big and they can really punish the wayward bowling and before you know... you will be taking flight back home... so instead of relying on part timers... it would be better if he shows some courage and gambles with a front line spinner instead...

this move can backfire too... but it's a gamble worth taking under present circumstances...

can't wait for india-pak encounter to begin... what a way to kick off a tournament... and the best part is... it’s not even a warm up match!

And lets not forget how successful South Africa have been with van de Merwe and Johan Botha, both of whom are reasonably good spinners. Dravid opening, I'm not sold on it and the left-right combo of Sachin and Gambhir makes much more sense to me. Both play the short ball as well as Dravid, the trouble is Dravid not batting at one down or opener, makes his inclusion meaningless when you have Yuvraj, Raina, Dhoni and Pathan to accelerate.

ach tho i too am not in favor of dravid opening but this seems to be the decision which team india has taken... they will see how gambhir shapes up and then the final decision will be taken...

your point on botha and merwe is excellent one and if they can do it with some consistency and success i dont think it should be too much for dhoni to do it... but the point is... is he willing...?

and here i am not sure about it...

I would rather bring back Ojha in the squad for any of our phaaast bowler, and would even consider playing all 3 frontline spinners.
