sachin should learn from bell...

by straight point

in fact india needs to learn from england as well...on how to play out a breathtaking draw...

when india played test cricket on a road in ahmedabad they played about 130 overs to secure a dull draw while still scoring at 4 rpo... sachin made one of the most dull centuries one would ever see...

cut to bell... he made 78 off god knows who many deliveries... got out... played one stellar innings... and england snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat crawling...

...and test cricket was saved...

if only sachin knew the intricacies of an innings one should play these days... and if only india learnt a lesson or two from england on how to infuse life even on a road... test cricket will be healthy in the subcontinent too...

SP, I don't think this sarcasm is justified. Truth is that the last 2-3 years have produced very few interesting test matches in our country. Apart from the first session, there were no assistance to the bowler till the last session in A'dbad , and this is not first time these sort of things happened. I still remember the packed stadiums when Australia came to India in 1998 and 2001; now these kinds of pitches and matches are the main reason they stay from the stadium. Whatever Bell/England/SA did it was good enough to draw attention of most of the people who were watching both the matches - ODI and Test; same can't be true about A'dbad, apart from the first day. Both the captains were also quick to slam the pitch after the matches. I sincerely feel a lot could be done if BCCI also start believing that things are not alright and the all round criticism by the cricketing world is not biased but based on some facts.

How much did the pitch have to do with England collapsing at Cardiff, Centurion or Cape Town? Absolutely nothing. It was just bad batting and I'm more than happy with our team saving tests without losing wickets to bad batting. That doesn't mean I'd like to see pitches like the one at the Motera, but too much has been made of how England are the torchbearers of test cricket. Last I checked they swept the Windies at home in front of empty stands. I'd like to see them sell out 50,000 seater stadiums when England plays a team other than Australia.

If England had played at Motera it would have been classic gripping test cricket, since true to form they would have collapsed there as well.

It's high time people saw the sheer ineptitude of the English team. Far from praise, they should be slammed and be ashamed of such efforts.

Sorry in the earlier comment by "these kind of pitches" I mean the Motera kind of. Mahek, do you see Graeme Smith complaining about the pitch after the match. Even if we discard the Cardiff pitch, which is newly laid, rest of the pitches in Ashes were good one for test matches. And also,, please do tell me how all the seven IND-AUS test matches before 2004 produced results and now we have 2 out four test matches ending in dull draws.

Sheer ineptitude!!!

Holding out Steyn and company more than a day, having a 1-0 lead against one of the best test outfits in world cricket after three test matches - I am not sure what ineptitude you are talking about.

Sure England is boring to watch but discarding them as trash is just unfair

Sheer ineptitude indeed ! Care to explain how they came to lose at Cardiff against that Aus attack.

Cut to Centurion - the match was dead as a dodo, and post tea another collapse.

And then yesterday. Only decent thing about the last match was the number of overs - but barring Steyn , pray who exactly are good in the South African attack ???

Lose at Cardiff !! it was a draw.

Also they were the eventual Ashes winner and to defeat Australians, current or past, team is no joke.

Centurion and Durban, I mean its very difficult to bat out one and a half day on either of these two pitches, which they did,of course with a collapse, but still they survived the whole period which itself is a big achievement.
I can't see any ineptitude here!!

My bad on the Cardiff bit, should have read - came close to lose.

You've just answered my query on the ineptitude of the English team, by using the term collapse. Pray how does collapsing not equate to ineptitude.

It does take some skill to collapse on pitches like the one at Cardiff, or Centurion.

When you survive an entire day on a fifth day pitch with seven wickets, that is really not a collapse in any sense. They have only lost one test match, just one, in their last 8 tests against two of the three best sides in the world
I know you don't like England’s cricket team, very few people do outside their country, but that cannot be used as a proof that they are doing badly at a time when they are actually showing some fighting spirit

Well said, SP.

South Africa were effectively going in with 2 bowlers on Day 5. Kallis is still not bowling at full pelt, de Wet was injured and Harris was, well, Harris. That they lost two wickets to Duminy on a pitch that hardly had anything for spinners shows the real reason behind the collapse.

Smith didn't complain because he's not Kumar Sangakkara. To your point about the Ind-Aus tests, you have to account for the disparity in bowling standards.

Again, that is not to say we should allow pitches like the one in Ahmedabad. Just highlighting the fact that quality of cricketers has a major role to play in the outcome of a game.

oz series was 2-0... sa series was 1-1 and now series with srilanka with three matches ends with 2-0 while the series to save test cricket in sa will at most finish with two results out of 4 test matches...

india or srilanka should have capitulated in a'bad irrespective of the strip to make it more interesting hence the lesson... :)

mahek i read in egoffery boycott blog that most of the tickets in england ashes series are bought by corporates and the attendance is more of their employees... :)

exactly tg... they should indeed be ashamed of this cricketing 'stunt'...
