selectors sleepwalk to t20 world cup team...

by straight point

this is my first reaction when i saw the team...

apparently they do not like to learn from history... so they have picked yuvraj singh like they selected sehwag last time, more in hope (and on reputation) than on fitness and form... and here's our chief selector who not so long ago vowed to the whole nation to never pick an injured player again... what a way to 'keep' his promise...

all i can say about rohit sharma's selection is that i have never seen a player being selected so often on promise only... a certain manish pandey has every reason to feel unlucky to miss out... coz he has not only shown promise but delivered consistently... across various platforms...

but the surprise selection is chawla's return... obviously ojha and mishra lost the battle for the second spinner's spot not with chawla the spinner... but chawla the batsman... i can already see them hitting net not with ball but bat in hand... which is unfortunate...

here is the squad...

MS Dhoni (capt & wk), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Yusuf Pathan, Dinesh Karthik, Ravindra Jadeja, Zaheer Khan, Praveen Kumar, Ashish Nehra, Harbhajan Singh, Piyush Chawla, Vinay Kumar, Rohit Sharma

It's quite ridiculous looking at it.

Firstly you've got Nehra and Gambhir who might not recover on time, but the selectors get a pass on this because they are good players.

Yuvraj - He's just unfit fullstop! He needs to lose some weight before being considered for any side, the selectors are really treating him like a prince.

Yusuf Pathan is still being picked on his ability to slaughter mediocre bowling attacks, but the selectors still haven't figured out that he can't play good bowlers and genuine quicks! We're going to the WEST INDIES for f**cks sake! He's going to be useless!

Congratulations to Vinay Kumar, still not sure about this decision, but he works well after some initial pressure from the opening bowlers, so if Zaheer and Praveen open well, he'll prove to be a good pick.

Murali Karthik still being ignored... he's way better than Chawla, amazing economy rate... but it seems the selectors have a genuine beef with him.

Just looking at it as a whole, Rohit Sharma's selection is actually the least questionable one, sorry to all the Pandey supporters, but we have a decent Top order, only lack good finishers a la Rohit/Kohli, but I reckon we're gonna regret banking on Yuvraj's Middle Order Ability, especially when Rohit fails after him. (Before anyone argues I said LEAST questionable, not NOT questionable)

The selectors do have a serious issue with picking on form...I also think they missed a trick by naming the probables so early (and so poorly... Naman Ojha, Wriddhiman Saha had no place in the 30), and maybe they were obliged to pick from the list of 30 which explains the exclusion of of Irfan, M Karthik... but still... this IPL is far from over, and I think we're gonna go into the world cup wondering why a few players aren't in the West Indies.

I hate to say it, but West Indian Pitches... We're gonna get bounced out of the second round.

NB, on a positive note, Harbhajan, Zaheer, Raina are in fine form, Praveen, Dhoni are in Marvelous form... maybe there's still hope

"Kris Srikkanth, the chairman of national selection committee, confirmed all players had sent in their fitness certificates, and that there were no fitness worries in the squad."
So, he s got a certificate proving that no one will get injured in the rest of the IPL?
Brilliant, machan.

Well, maybe if all the expectations eased off they ll play better?
Remember no one expected much from Dhoni s team in 07.

So Mishra doesn't make it once again while Chawla does. I'm not sure he's a better batsman than Mishra either. But then Mishra isn't fancy enough to be in the side, is he?

This is a team that is going to get its arse handed to it by Afghanistan. As someone who followed the Afghan team in their recent campaigns to qualify for the big leagues, let me just say:

1. They are all frighteningly fit.
2. They play with an intensity that is rarely matched.
3. They have a FAST bowler in Hamid Hassan (90mph+ all the time)
4. They learnt their cricket in Pakistan... so they will play in a manner reminiscent of the title holders... probably fitter.

Make no mistake. If any Indian player takes the Afghanistan game a little bit lightly, we will get out arses handed to us.

@ Straight point

That's pretty much what I'm talking about, not the fact that the bounce is low, but rather that it's unpredictable.

I'll be honest I haven't looked into which grounds are being used for the tournament, but the point I was trying to highlight is that Anil Kumble has just proved that the Indians still haven't sorted their issues with the short ball.

Also sorry about the length of my comment, it was just one of those moments where I read the squad, then saw ur post, and just had to get all of that off my chest before I forced someone at work to listen to me talk about cricket!

no i didn't meant that way kny... i really liked your points except one...

the short ball problem is universal... see around yourself in cricketing world and you would know that...

cheers!

Except for 2 iffy selection, otherwise this is a good one. Kohli instead of Rohit and either mishra/ohja instead of chawla. Anyway the probability for them to play is very minimal.

When was the last time indian team was selected on form alone?? We fans always argue that form is temperory and class is permanent. It goes a long way from sachin/ganguly/dravid/bajji. So yuvi selection is not a surprise even though i would have been happy to seem him dumped.

WI pitches?? recently assortment of Zim spinners wrecked havoc there. WI pitches lost their glory long back. So the short ball stuff is not going to be problem.

For first few matches, Karthik, Rohit, chawla and vinay are going to sit out anyway.

What, no Tendulkar? ... just kidding :)

It's okay SP. If they crash out in the first round, they can always blame it on fatigue and too much cricket. They thought this true.

Can't we play four foreign players too?

Jokes apart, it's good to see Vinay Kumar in. Sadly, there's not a single new batsman. For me, dump Yuvi and pick Pandey instead.
