i have seen...

by straight point

a doctor diagnose the way his hospital wants him to...

a geek code program the way his firm wants him to...

an insurance agent sell policies the way his agency wants him to...

an editor cut programs the way his channel wants him to...

a journalist write the way his publication wants him to...

then why is it when commentators chant mrf blimps... howl dlf maximums... they are equated to sucking ipl's balls...?

A doctor diagnoses to the need/illness of the patient. If i go to see a doctor for headache he should not give medicine for stomach ache.

A geek write codes what the firm says but according to the customers need.

An insurance agent sells what the agency says but he can sell only what the customer eventually wants.

But i can accept your views on editor and journalists.

But overall yes, they also have to make a living like you and me.

Maybe their designation can be changed from commentators to Merchandising Managers or say IPL Promotional Managers. By this every1 can rest in piece as they will be doing what their designation or role profile says. Am i right?

welcome kanda...

you can dispute with what i said... but can not dispute with this... as you have put urself...

But overall yes, they also have to make a living like you and me.

we all do in life the way we are told to... then why not commentators...? do they come from mars...?

imemyself said...

Certainly the commentators are not from mars but actually the problem is with us.
Till few years ago we were used to commentators who just commented about cricket thats happening and related stuff. And overall they said sensible stuff.

But times changed, cricket as a product changed, the organisers changed, the marketers changed and even commentators changed. But some of the viewers cannot able to change their view atleast wrt commentators. Thats why so much of negative reaction towards them.

It will be interesting to see whether the marketers are going to extract their pounds of flesh from WCs like in IPL.

tell me does ipl draws money from icc like other 'cricket' you have mentioned...?

imemyself said...

I think either you misunderstood my point or i havent put it across clearly.

"tell me does ipl draws money from icc like other 'cricket' you have mentioned...?"

I never mentioned anywhere that IPL is receiving money from ICC.

What i meant was, will the marketers bargain with ICC to insert their brands in commentary like they are doing with IPL?

Anyway all the big sponsors are going to be Indian companies.

straight point said...

what i meant is unlike other 'cricket' funded by icc who gets money from many sources... ipl has to stand on its own... and create money from the only product they have... hence the question...

imemyself said...

But still World cups are the properties of ICC and the main sponsors(mostly indians) have to deal with them.
My question again is,
will the marketers bargain with the ICC to insert their brand name in commentary like maximums or successes?

I think certainly there is a chance for that as they have tasted the possibilities.

the answer lies in... have u ever been to a sponsored event...?

The biggest cost for franchises is the money they're paying the BCCI for franchise rights. That is where the problem starts.

High franchise fees have to be recouped so TV rights are sold at exorbitant prices. The company that pays so much for TV rights has to find ways to make profit. Unfortunately it resorts to employing idiots to cut costs and slot in ads at every opportunity.

You can look at it the way you just have and accept it. Don't expect others to do it as well. There is a limit to the amount of commercialism one can take, don't expect the limit to be the same for everyone. We will watch the cricket and cringe at the commercialism, you can celebrate it.

Kanda

It won't happen at the ICC World Cup. They could have done it last year as well. The fact is cricket had a lot of it even before the DLF Maximums and Shitty Moments of Success, it's just the greed of the BCCI that has led to the kind of production promotion we see in the IPL. They can get away with it because the IPL doesn't have any competition in the Indian market. It's either the IPL or saas-bahu soaps as the majority of the people only follow cricket and the cable operator mafia screws people like me who watch other sports by not providing all the sports channels.

straight point said...

guys we are derailing the issue at hand...

check please...

the post is about why commentators should be blamed... not about whether icc will include it or not... or about bcci greed...

Mahek said...

Except the extent of commercialism depends on the greed of the parties involved.

BTW, a lot of people have been put off by the media reporting rubbish. But that doesn't mean it's going to stop because it's the people who want to follow the Sania-Shoaib affair who give news channels the chance to report rubbish.

We tolerate a lot of trash in the name of people needing to make a living but we need to draw a line somewhere or the other. If you don't want to then don't, but don't deny others the right to.

straight point said...

who am i to deny them mahek...?

most of them work under diktat and come out blaming others...

isn't it falls under my right to highlight the hypocrisy if i want to...?? :)

Mahek said...

What makes you think anyone who criticises any aspect of the IPL does so because he/she is under orders? Do you know them personally? Or is it that the IPL is so good that anyone who criticises it must be doing it because they have an agenda?

straight point said...

do not stuff words in my mouth... i meant thru post is that in every walks of life ppl DO work under diktat... why blaming commentators only...?

i can not put it more simply than this...

Mahek said...

Then you should also know that at times working under a diktat comes with criticism.

straight point said...

ever heard of getting read alert on screen the moment one starts surfing at work...?

so indeed mahek... we all must blame them... while doing the same thing at our work place... this will make us 'healthy and mature' society... :D

cheers!!!

Mahek said...

Right, so when you are well aware of office politics seeing some employees getting preferential treatment over others you should be okay with players like Chawla and Nohit make the side ahead of Mishra and Pandey/Kohli/Uthappa.

straight point said...

exactly my point mahek...

who would you blame for this...? chawla...?

Mahek said...

So you would blame the management, which in this case is the selectors. But you still work in that environment, don't you? Similarly, people can criticise the MRFisms in the IPL and still watch it.

straight point said...

now you got it...

at least i will not blame chawla for the non selection of mishra/ojha or any xyz... and by the same token won't blame commentators either... :D
