Should Sanjay Manjrekar be given a farewell match as commentator?

by Gaurav Sethi

Once Sanjay Manjrekar was omitted from the BCCI’s panel of commentators, there was no cricket left to commentate on. While Manjrekar took his omission far more gracefully than Ravindra Jadeja took his criticism as a “bits and pieces cricketer”, there’s no saying how this will end.

Manjrekar has been outspoken in his comment; often something that hasn’t gone down too well with watchers of the game – be it his take on Jadeja or Cheteshwar Pujara, he has minced no words.

But when it comes to his relentless praise of Rohit Sharma through the years, he’s spared no garnish.

Now the preoccupation with Rohit’s talent and unfulfilled promise has not been Manjrekar’s alone – commentators, many of them former cricketers, have spent so much time Rohiting away, it’s surprising Star Sports failed to start a channel for this sole purpose. What would they call it – Star Talent of course.

This could have led to Talent scouts, Talent hunts and a remake of the Hollywood film, The Talented Mr Ripley (rechristened as The Talented Mr Rohit).

Once upon a time, I was a huge fan of Sanjay Manjrekar’s – there I said it. Yes, I even said so on air. On NDTV, on a show titled The evolution of cricket commentary – from close to six years back but yes, I said it. After 30 minutes into the show when asked about our favourite commentator, I mention how commentators work in pairs and how Manjrekar-Chappell were one such pair, with an almost father-son rapport.

Today, when cricket and all sport appeared to have been given a farewell, we must ask ourselves, doesn’t Sanjay deserve a farewell match? Hell, even Ashish Nehra got one. Sachin got two.

Or would the BCCI rather have him go into exile and spawn another ICL and draw Ambati Rayudu back into it again?

There’s much time for thought. I suggest a white ball game where Rohit Sharma will captain, open the batting and speak to Sanjay after the match. It is all he would have dreamed of.

Another thing, Ian Chappell should be invited as well. And if it’s TRPs that Star is after, maybe they seat Sourav, Sachin and Greg Chappell together as well.

After all, they pulled off Bhajji and Hayden, didn’t they? And there will be so much lost time to make up for – who knows, maybe they cage Manjrekar through his stints, promoting the match as Sanjay WildKar. Pujara can make an ODI comeback, what more could Manjrekar ask for? An elephant in the room perhaps.

Next: Should I be given a welcome match on Manjrekar's farewell match?

Does the IPL wanna go to rehab?

by Gaurav Sethi

In the early 2000s, Delhi’s favourite fast food chain, Nirula’s hired a new ad agency. As new agencies often do, they rewrote the brand script, leaving little trace of what existed before. If that meant changing the familiar, so be it. The first things to be changed were the familiar packaging that had Nirula’s running across the pizza boxes in a loop. It didn’t quite feel like Nirula’s anymore. The store’s neon signs too were changed. The interiors were tweaked in the name of change.
The IPL got underway a few days ago, shifting from Sony to Star. Or from Uranus to Neptune. The presenters were asked to stop dressing for a big fat Punjabi wedding. They were even asked to stop behaving as if they were downing Black Labels at the bar. It’s just that the Black Labels were like the sponsors - and the mere mention of a sponsor was like a bottoms up double Patiala peg. Nobody did it better than the teetotaler, Laxman Sivaramakrishnan.
The Vivo IPL VIP Box was made to sound like Disneyland. How? It was air-conditioned. Yeah, India is hot in April, even hotter in May. Where else would you like to be than the VIP Box that had air-conditioning? Not just that, there was a fridge with cool drinks and TVs with the live telecast that you could watch the match on while you were at the match – or you could hang out at the balcony of the VIP Box – waving like performing monkeys – for that was part of the deal.
There was a button pressed before each match, and from the pre-match show to the post-match wrap-up, everyone was in overdrive. Everyone had to shout. Sound drunk. Behave as if they were about to be ejected from a wedding.

Through all this, one guy remained funny, stayed cool. Gaurav Kapur is a funny guy. He somehow walked Sony’s tightrope of melodrama without losing his originality.
Here we are now, without the "Manoranjan ka Baap" approach – without Kapur, Kochar, Siva and Sidhu. There’s no Ravi Shastri for now. The caricatures have been drawn away. Sunil Gavaskar remains, he appears to be a mainstay of Indian cricket broadcasting.
But even with Gavaskar, his random funnies, and permission to say pretty much whatever comes to mind, Star’s telecast is a far cry from the Sony daze. While it’s great not to be tutored on the virtues of a Maruti Suzuki Brezza’s stunning looks and styling on repeat – oh right, there’s a Tata car there now – there is something peculiar that’s missing.
Sony’s broadcast was all-out weird, there was no play at pretense – it was in your face, a whack on the head, a kick in the gut. Star, meanwhile, has made it out to be just another cricket broadcast with their usual straitjacketed presenters. Star has made the IPL into cricket. For Sony, the brief all along was – it’s not just cricket, it’s entertainment first. And while they pushed the limits of senselessness, often testing our patience, they plugged into hype like the Piper into his pipe. The mice were the sponsors and the viewers, and Sony was determined to lead everyone off the cliff. We died a many death just watching, but in viewing this atrocity, we had somehow tapped into a sort of Stockholm syndrome. It was so bad it was almost good.
Almost by default, with Star, there has been an effort to be as unlike Sony as possible – simply by being more like themselves. Star has now monopolised Indian cricket’s broadcasting rights. Chances are, if you’re playing a half-way meaningful cricket match in India, Star has the rights to it.
While the overall IPL viewing experience has improved, it’s definitely stiffer. The reasoning cannot be faulted – in a cricket match, let cricket be the hero. But the debate still stands – was the IPL just another cricket match? It was desi hyperbole, Sony’s promos and jingles always had that, it’s another thing, they didn’t know when to stop. With Star, however, could the problem be, they don’t know when to start?
Broadcasting aside, the IPL has a way to always warm up to the familiar – CSK and Rajasthan Royals are back, as is Shane Warne to mentor them, Gautam Gambhir is with Delhi Daredevils again. Somewhere in London, Lalit Modi is marking time, who knows, planning his return with Vijay Mallya.
As for Star, it won’t take them long to discover their own brand of lightness. The IPL has this way to make everyone bend. It defies logic but everyone seems to come around.
Just hear Kevin Pietersen go on about the IPL, and for a moment you’ll think you’re in the good old Sony days. Well, you can’t overwrite 10 seasons in one, can you?

Let's talk about sex.

by Gaurav Sethi

I love talking about stuff nobody else will, especially on air. On this NDTV show, I started with bummer trips and commentary, go on to the Rohit Sharma vs Virat Kohli bias on air, a few years back - led by two Indian commentators, and the icing on the cake, CSK - and naturally, fixing follows.

You can listen to the whole thing here on NDTV

Also on board are Dean Jones, Venki Prasad, Kishore Bhimani, and best of all these incredible imitations of Tony Greig, Shastri, SRT, Bhogle, you name it. His name's Sabyasachi Tripathy, look out for it.

Boring Cricket Commentating Idiots XI

by Mahek

With commentary being such an integral part of the cricketing experience, it's only fitting that there was a discussion on the best in the business. There have been teams of the year and sides of the century, but honours don't come much greater than being part of the greatest collection of commentators to have irritated us with their cliches and prejudices. So with much satisfaction and a large dose of fear, BCC! is introducing the definitive search for the all-time crappiest commentators from all the Test-playing countries.

It's time we recognized the booming voice of Ravi Shastri, the patronising comments of Sir Ian Botham, those anti-white remarks of Sunil Gavaskar. Ian Healy needs to be appreciated for wearing his baggy green in the Channel 9 commentary box. And this list wouldn't be complete without Tony Greig who is in a tririlemma about what team to call his own. Make no mistake, the competition will be tense and since there can only be a team of 11, something will have to give. Rest assured the race will go down to the wire.

In order to ensure none of these commentators slip through the web, I encourage our readers to nominate the commentators that have enriched their cricket-viewing experience with their description of the bleeding obvious. We're talking about the kings of cliches, the princes of bad puns, the badshahs of bias. Nominations are welcome until 00:00 GMT on Sunday, December 6. Once the nominations are in, due diligence will be done to examine their commentating credentials. The list will be divided into groups based on the commentators' primary job when they were cricketers. Our XI will comprise 2 opening batsmen, 3 middle order batsmen, an allrounder, a wicket-keeper, 3 pace bowlers and a spinner.

Voting with start from Monday, December 7 with readers choosing their opening batsmen. It will continue for 7 days, after which it will be turn of middle order stalwarts. This will continue for six weeks, after which BCC! will announce the Elite Eleven.

In case you're wondering what's in it for the voters, there is absolutely nothing. However, it does give them a chance to hurl abuses at commentators, share their favourite quotes, basically provide further evidence of how bored and cricket crazy they are.

Phoren Baba's chasing him... Again !!

by RajaB

It was roughly a week ago when we figured that Anil Kumble & Saurav Ganguly would be part of the World Cup T20 commentary team.

Kumble has kept us entertained through the initial round robin matches. But did we take some timeout to think about our dear Dada ??

Where is he ? Why are we not hearing his voice yet ?

When are we going to listen to his "a wink a word" style of speech ??

Bored is in possession of some (interesting) inside information on why we still don't have Dada winking at us.

Yes, it is the Phoren Baba's in action again. Sources close to Dada suspect that a former coach of the Indian cricket team who asked him to explore life outside cricket might be one of the reasons. He might be the secret scheduler who allots commentators matches and airtime. And it is he and his coterie who have deliberately kept Dada out of the team.

But Dada is confident that he would find his second life in IPL.

Yes, next year they are going to test a revolutionary format in IPL. The players would be the commentators, all the ex's in the box would be moderators who would enable the players to comment from the ground.

So you would be able to hear Dada saying "That was a very tough catch, I tried my level best but couldn't hold on to it. But cricket is a team game, the other guys too should raise up to the occasion and win matches for us", and that too live as he drops

A jumbo commentary team

by RajaB

Lots of retired stars are joining the commentary team for the ICC T20 World Cup...

The latest to join the bandwagon are Saurav Ganguly and Anil Kumble

How do you describe this eclectic mix of extraordinarily talented men ?

The commentary "Mumbo Jumbo" ??

With the addition of Anil Kumble to the list this description seems very apt

Chennai playing Bangalore

17.4, Jacob Oram bowling to Ross Taylor

Yorker length ball slightly outside offstump.

Taylor tries to dig it out and misses it.

Dhoni, the wicketkeeper is yorked too !!

Missing to show the full face of his pads and stop it... The ball takes the edge of the pad and runs down for 4 byes.

Harsha Bhogle on commentary "This is Diwali, Dusheera & Sankaranti, all rolled into one... A gift"

I am wondering what to chose as "B the moment" ?!!

Dhoni's miss or Bhogle's list of holidays ??

B the moment of the match

by RajaB

Chennai playing Rajasthan

16.1 Hayden powers the ball to deep midwicket and bulldozes his way through Warne, the bowler for 2 runs.

It's the turn of Robin Jackman, now in charge of the mike...

"He runs very quickly, Mathew Hayward..."

Stoic silence, before our own Ranjit Fernando breaks the ice with his echo of the sentiment.

Robin interjects... Oh I said Hayward, Hayden

Is the commentary team on drugs or something?? Everyone speaking the same language today.

Ah Action !

by Bhaskar Khaund

Must say the IPL commentators have treated their brief with exemplary professionalism and done a good job of pumping up that crazy IPL jam
Talking of crazy , CSK v K-XI this evening :
Cue - Appa..sorry , Sreesanth to Hayden - Hayden cuts powerfully
Danny Morrison (super ballistic shout) : " AND HAYDEN GOES CRAZY THROUGH POINT...."
Cut to - Ball fielded comfortably near the boundary
Danny Morrison (toned down) : " ....but it's fielded there"
Dan mate , YOU went pointlessly crazy there !
Took me back to the DD days of yore :
Commentator (super excited and loud) : "AUR YEH SHAANDAAR SHOT....."
Commentator (not excited and soft) : "ek run ke liye."
Camera pans (like crazy) in zag zag fashion (unsuccessfully) searching for the action
Those were the days when teams would give up when the AR rose above 4.1 and T20 could only be Tea after 20 overs.
By the way , anyone tell me whether "cut to" applies to live TV camera , esp sport ?

B the moment of the match

by RajaB

It's funny finding a moment of the match even before the match is halfway complete...

But I am sure this is...

Dirk Nannes bowling the 18th over for Delhi.

It was Jacob Oram of Chennai who faced him

A good hit from Oram could only take him as close as a yard and a half near the wide long on boundary

AB de Villiers took a well judged catch to return Oram to his rightful place at the dugout

Mr Gavaskar, the commentator I thought overplayed how close AB was to the boundary just to make that moment of success plug make some (exciting) sense.

Mr Gavaskar and his band of commentators, what a funny bunch they are turning out to be.

Well, let me re-phrase the last part of that line...

These sponsor plugs are bring the ass out of these commentators...

Bored to the bone – Quote of the day

Innings break, the wickets package on Neo Sports.

Ian Chappell & Mohinder Amarnath.

Ian Chappell’s comment on Zaheer Khan’s run out.

I don’t know why the on-field commentators were blaming Dhoni for this run out. Zaheer is an experienced player and see what he is doing here. Trying to go through Bangalore for a run in Mohali…
