94 - Are you f'n kidding me??

by Dhaanu

The current IPL format with its 40 odd match is by itself exhausting to follow. What are the franchisee owners smoking that has made them lobby to keep the existing format inspite of the addition of two teams and increase the matches to a mind boggling 94? Do they not understand the concept of overkill?

It would seem logical if the franchisees had only a short term outlook (one to two years). Then it would be understandable if were to milk the cash cow dry. But these chaps have committed to the IPL for 10 frigging years. Their balance sheet is writing off the entire fixed cost incurred on bidding for franchises over ten long years. A 94 match tournament may bring in the moolah in the first year (i.e. IPL 4) and show and lead to a good balance sheet for FY12. However if, sorry when the diminishing returns funda sets in....

Also the IPL will miss Lalit Modi's service. Say what you want about him but the IPL worked because of him and his team. With them gone, we have the fat suits like Chirayu Amin left. Will the management skills of Modi and his team be replicated by these chaps? Especially when it comes to maintaining interest of 90 plus matches.

They'll try to do something ridiculous every year to keep from getting diminishing returns.

Already N Srinivasan's becoming a heel

just for the sake of an alternative argument here is what i wrote sometime back...

why 94 matches are not that bad...

Actually they know that indian cricket fans are addicts so they know that their returns will not be significantly diminished by putting more of the product out there. People will still watch.

The only problem of course is that the indian team will be horrible for the rest of the year as injuries, lack of form, commitment and fitness begin to tell after a punishing 18 match commitment to the IPL.

The current IPL format has 60 matches and not 40 odd..

and 94 is decent enough and we have a huge market and I am sure it will be alright when scheduled properly..no one had a problem with IPL 1, it also had a similar number of matches...it's just that World T20 were so close to the IPL the playeers performed badly all this is coming along...it does not have a permanent effect...didnt we play well in teh Asia cup..? So proper scheduling like a month or 20 day break after the IPL will be more than enough...IPL 4 is after CWC 2011 hence player fatigue will NOT be an issue..

@Alok

18 T20 matches..come on.. 18* 40 overs = 720 overs of cricket...let it be of oh so much how so ever intensity or travel it should not be an issue..how are the foreign players able to cope up with it? Did KP,Kallis,Gayle struggle with fitness after the IPL? It's just that Indian players need to improve their fitness levels..

And were we 'Horrible' in the Asia cup? which was just less than 2 months after the IPL...

The only problem of course is that the indian team will be horrible for the rest of the year sounds like something from Aajtak! :D

Problem with 94 is that if played at one go, it will need to be at least 60 days long. With the ICC not giving a window, there will be clashes with quite a few international matches. So quite a few matches without the international stars. Which mean lesser star power and lower playing quality.
The first year (IPL4) will be okay. However not sure if IPL5 will be good if play deteriorates and people get bored with club T20 matches (which the IPL frankly is)

@Dhaanunjay

Lalit had previously mentioned that with 94 matches also the league would not extend beyond 7 weeks..anyhow they can have 3 games on weekends as well...it would mean 1 game would start at 12 noon and those could be held in places like Dharamshala, b'lore where the weather isn't as harsh as compared to other venues..The hoem, Away system is good for the sport..it increases the rivalry..and gives team following a whole new dimension and meaning..

20 day break? We're supposed to tour the West Indies in June and England right after that.

Noon starts on weekends? Cities are roasting during the months of May and June. Yeah let's treat the cricketers like slaves and make them play in 45 degree heat. Afterall, the franchise owners have made no bones about the fact that the IPL is not cricket.

@Mahek.
I suggested that it would be better if we had a 20 day break...We all know what the BCCI will do..Maybe they can tweak the international schedule..maybe..

and I had mentioned 12 noon matches in places like Dharamshala..where the max temperature doesn't even reach 35-40 during summers..if they can find venues like that they should have 3 matches..anyhow 2 matches everyday won't be so bad after all if the 3 match theory doesn't work out...!
