The Curious Case of Umesh Yadav

by Aditya

The last time India won a Test match against a ‘good opposition’ was back in November 2012.

To clear all doubts let me define a “good opposition” first. It depends on various factors like the quality of the Indian team, conditions they play in and the quality of the opposition amongst other things.

For example when India played New Zealand in New Zealand earlier this year it was against a good opposition, but New Zealand weren’t a good opposition when they played in India a couple of years ago.

To give another example of ‘good opposition’: The Australian team which toured India in 2010 was a good opposition but the one which toured in 2013 was definitely not one.

The match India won in question is the Test against England in Ahmedabad  Umesh Yadav was very effective in that match and got Ian Bell and Samit Patel in successive deliveries to ensure England couldn’t built on a decent platform laid by their top order. Throughout the Test he was effective and got the ball to reverse as well. After that he missed out on the remaining tests in the series as well as on Australia’s tour to India owing to a back injury.

Prior to this series he had an OK series vs New Zealand at home, picking up 5 wickets in a series where 31 out of the 39 wickets to fall were taken by Ashwin & Ojha. He was one of the few positives on that disastrous tour of Australia, picking up a 5 for and taking 15 wickets at a strike rate of 50.5 while Ishant Sharma took 4 wickets at a Strike rate of 150.6.

All in all he played 9 Tests (5 of them on non responsive pitches in India) and took 32 wickets at a good average of 32.5 while touching 140 kmph regularly. You would think he could walk into the Indian team given the lack of genuinely quick bowlers India produce.

After recovering from his back injury, he was promptly called back into the Test Squad for Sachin’s Farewell Series in which he warmed the benches with Ishant Sharma. Picked for the South Africa tour, he again warmed  benches and saw Zaheer, Ishant and Shami play ahead of him in tests. Rinse repeat for New Zealand Tour where got a solitary chance in the warm up game, returned with figures of 18-4-70-1  and then warmed the benches for the tests - Zaheer, Ishant and Shami played both the games ahead of him.

The selectors kept picking him in the squad but MS Dhoni & Fletcher didn’t pick him in the playing XI. The selectors picked a pace heavy squad for the England tour, even dropping Zaheer Khan in a sign that they were looking towards the future and investing in younger bowlers. You would assume that they would pick Umesh Yadav in the squad for England as well. But they picked Varun Aaron ( has played 1 test till now. Gets injured often , whether he lasts 5 tests is a big question ), Pankaj Singh ( He deserved his chances 2-3 years ago when he was doing extremely well for Rajasthan, now it seems like a Token Pick to show that BCCI isn't against Rajasthan players even after Lalit Modi  is RCA President ), Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishwar Pandey ( Hasn't made his Test Debut yet ), Mohd. Shami and Ishant Sharma ("Leader" of the attack ). That’s 6 specialist pace bowlers and no Umesh Yadav. Is Umesh Yadav not even in the top 6 pace bowlers in India ?

Joe Dawes has been Team India's bowling coach from February 2012, it seems as if he is on Auto-Pilot. You don't see innovative measures from India's fast bowlers. Its highly likely that his views were considered selectors before they decided to pick the 6 pace bowlers, which is very inexperienced ( Excluding Ishant, the other 5 have played 13 tests in total and only Mohd. Shami has played a test outside India ). Umesh Yadav has played in Australia and has played 9 tests as well.

I can see 2 reasons why Umesh Yadav wasn’t picked for the England tour.

  • Indian Team think tank ( MS Dhoni, Duncan Fletcher and Joe Dawes) have communicated to the selectors that they don’t see Umesh in their scheme of things.
                                                                              or
  • Selectors realized that in spite of picking Umesh Yadav time and again in the test squads he isn’t getting a game (3 test series and 6 tests) and hence decided to give Indian Team think tank newer options to chose from.

It is really disappointing to see Umesh Yadav missing out. He could have learned a lot on the long tour of England. Indian Team think tank , haven’t handled Umesh Yadav well at all. He is a rare Indian quick bowler, he surely deserved better treatment from the team management. It must be tough for Umesh Yadav to watch the team playing in England from his home. Hopefully that inspires him to do well in the domestic season ahead and he makes a comeback to the Test team for the Australia Tour later this year.

not that i had any doubts about it... neither do i envy murali vijay...

but when vijay got a century cheeka jumped up and down in ecstasy and then settled down to sigh on national tv... that had it not been for the icc rule to select t20 world cup team a month in advance... he would have picked murali vijay... without a hint of guilt...

by the same token, why not a single word for two bowlers... ojha and mishra... who are the highest wicket takers this season...?

selectors sleepwalk to t20 world cup team...

this is my first reaction when i saw the team...

apparently they do not like to learn from history... so they have picked yuvraj singh like they selected sehwag last time, more in hope (and on reputation) than on fitness and form... and here's our chief selector who not so long ago vowed to the whole nation to never pick an injured player again... what a way to 'keep' his promise...

all i can say about rohit sharma's selection is that i have never seen a player being selected so often on promise only... a certain manish pandey has every reason to feel unlucky to miss out... coz he has not only shown promise but delivered consistently... across various platforms...

but the surprise selection is chawla's return... obviously ojha and mishra lost the battle for the second spinner's spot not with chawla the spinner... but chawla the batsman... i can already see them hitting net not with ball but bat in hand... which is unfortunate...

here is the squad...

MS Dhoni (capt & wk), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Yusuf Pathan, Dinesh Karthik, Ravindra Jadeja, Zaheer Khan, Praveen Kumar, Ashish Nehra, Harbhajan Singh, Piyush Chawla, Vinay Kumar, Rohit Sharma

open thread: second test second coming...

by straight point

so we lost this match... any team that can lose six wickets for twelve runs with not much on the board will always be chasing leather...

the pitch had no demons and it was pure brilliance of steyn supported well by all bowlers that made it possible for sa... having said that... had our two centurions not lapsed in concentration after reaching individual milestones things could well have been interesting in the middle considering we came as close as 6 runs to wipe sa total... but such is life...

i expect india to come hard at sa in the next match... we are not no.1 for nothing and one match cannot make us bad suddenly... tho it has exposed certain chinks in our armor for sure...

badri showed that he has the temperament to fight it out in the middle and vijay showed his class in second innings but both failed to press the matter further... i am particularly disappointed by vijay tho... he will have to learn quickly that nice 30s and 40s are not going to help him much and if he wants to look for inspiration he should look no further than a certain akash chopra...

having said that... i don't want selectors to make them bakra for this defeat... but at the same time i expect them to use horses for courses policy for next match... as this being two test series so we have only one match to retain the no.1 spot with next test match is not coming in a while...

so my team for next test match will be...

sehwag, gambhir, vijay, sachin, badri, dhoni, irfan pathan, ramesh powar, zaheer, mishra, ojha/ishant

irfan pathan and powar making a second coming... while last spot is depending upon the look of the eden garden pitch...

i have deliberately not included laxman coz first he is coming straight after injury... second even if he is fit to bat... he wont be standing at slip... so call me mean if you want but laxman not standing at slip isnt something i will sacrifice a spot for...

on this note i leave an open thread to invite your opinions... lets set the ball rolling...

update:
it seems selectors were in even more hurry than me to put up a post... and they have already announced the squad for the next test... probably they too didn't want to waste the extra day's rest this match has provided them... so here it goes...

MS Dhoni (capt/wk), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Murali Vijay, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, S Badrinath, Harbhajan Singh, Amit Mishra, Zaheer Khan, Sreesanth, Ishant Sharma, Pragyan Ojha, Dinesh Kartik, Suresh Raina.

The curious case of Yusuf Pathan

by RajaB

Despite his best efforts cooking up zeros, Yusuf remains in the Indian team. Getting all the colours right on a rubik's cube would be easier than trying to solve this puzzle of understanding why. It looked such till we got hold of a transcript of the selection committee meeting to finalize the teams for the home series against Srilanka.

Krish Srikanth: Now let us discuss allrounders…

Voice1: Sanjay Bangar, he has been doing well in Ranji recently

Voice2: Then what about Rajat Bhatia, he is younger compared to Bangar…

Voice3: And Bangar has had his chances, now we should encourage youngsters

Voice1: So what about Pathan ?

Voice2: Which one ?

Voice3: No… No what have they done of any note off late… Except appearing on TV and dancing with Fara Khan ?

Krish Srikanth: Yes… I agree. Why Pathan ?

Voice1: Cheeka you mean Y Pathan ?

Krish Srikanth: Yes, why Pathan ?

Voices (in chorus): So Cheeka you mean take him ?

Krish Srikanth: Yes take him off

Voices (in chorus): Ok we take him… Y Pathan, Y Pathan

sree is back... so are we...

by bored cricket crazy indians

when there was not a word spoken about sree... when not even sree gave himself a chance... when talking about sree was taboo... we at bored kept reminding you of his existence... that's when freesanth was born... we wanted him to be free of all our prejudiced opinions...

we didn't give up hope even when bcci issued him a final warning... we sensed that sreesanth was on the verge of breaking into the team as early as mid october... here's what we said...

it can be that he is on the verge of team india selection and the bcci wants to make sree aware of any fallouts if he goes astray again... otherwise why would they care...?

i won't be surprised if he plays for india again as early as the australia odi series... given the team's pace problems, the warning can just be a timely rap on the knuckles to get his act together to become 'acceptable'...

now that he was been selected for the first two tests against sri lanka... we hope sree seizes the moment...

there is one request tho... the powers that be should give him some breathing space and not look upon him as an object that is put under constant surveillance...
