a few days back at SP i argued that we can use harbhajan as a bowling allrounder to bat at no. 7 and was pleasantly surprised to see him coming in at no. 3 in the ongoing challenger trophy...
he didn't disappoint either... and scored 36 of 36 balls against a decent attack...
is dhoni seriously looking to explore the possibility of utilising harbhajan as a bowling allrounder... or was it a one off thing...?
i was following the game on cricinfo for a while... and there was an interesting comment on suresh kumar...
Sunil Mathew: "why dhoni is not bowling suresh kumar as he is a crafty bowler [off spinner ] than jalaj saxena and believe me he is an exciting stroke player. watch out for this lad he is going to surprise a few people."
suresh kumar was the highest scorer for india blue with 87 runs... and he din't bowl a single ball in the match...
the point is... does dhoni do his homework on domestic hopefuls...? does nobody give him tips about domestic players...?
then how are we going to explore the alternate skills of unknown domestic players...?

The way he's going, Bhajji could end up as a batting allrounder. At least he enjoys his batting, and there's Sachin to coach him.
Poor Suresh Kumar, that top score will be his ruin, how can he bowl when he can bat?
You can kiss the World Cup goodbye if that happens. The guy doesn't even have an ODI fifty to his name and it's not for lack of chances. Right now he's the quintessential Indian allrounder - Can't bat, can't bowl, can't field.
yes ever since he has become a pal of sachin his batting has started to blossom...
NC...tho that way it worked out best for SK... had dhoni given him bowl he would not send him to bat... ;-)
mahek... do you seriously think his batting at sydney and even his partnership with zaheer when oz toured us that turned the match for india was a fluke...?
he has some serious potential to become a good bat and why go as far as world cup when we can explore the possibility much before that in some other games to follow...?
SP, I dont think Harbhajan can become a batting allrounder by any stretch of imagination. He may have had a few really good innings, but does that make him a capable batsman? I doubt it. He has far too many flaws and shortcomings, which even Sachin's guidance cannot do anything about. And watching someone batting for India green/blue/red/whatever and scoring runs doesnt give me a high.
Jason Gillespie has a test double hundred to his name but there is no way he could be a regular number 7. Look around different teams and you'll see the standard set by number 7 batsmen and ask yourself if Harbhajan can ever attain those standards. He's only one sledge away from a brain fart, sometimes it doesn't even take that to get him to play a pathetic shot.
K... its an indicator... if you can score run a ball against attack that consist of ishant (highet wicket taker) munaf (who surprisingly is in very good form) and no pushover tyagi... than you have to think that whether this can be exploited further... why shut down the thought in mind itself... why not try it on ground... and see if it can work out...?

now don't tell me that gillespie and harbhajan have similar game... one is blocker and other has interesting array of shots with reasonable technique... the way i have seen till now... the sledging etc only propels bhajji to focus more other wise his innings in sydney would have never happend when virtually every member of the team was going for him...
and as i commented to K why shut the thought in mind itself... why not give it a shot...? what worse he can do that yousuf pathan has not done...?
If that technique is reasonable then I must have impeccable technique. Even Zaheer Khan is a better batsman than him. He has to pull his weight as a bowler first and if he can't he should be out of the side.
Why is there such an outcry about Yusuf Pathan? He hardly gets to bat in ODIs and when he does it's mostly when the top order has screwed up and he has to temper his natural game. To put this into perspective, the longest streak of matches he's batted in is 5. He hasn't batted in a third of the matches he's played. How is a player supposed to perform when he doesn't even get a chance to?
You can either discard someone with genuine batting talent and be without a lower order hitter in 2011 or you can give him more opportunities to succeed the way Symonds was.
