What has the Virat-Anushka wedding done to us

by Gaurav Sethi

It rained in Virat Kohli’s Delhi after his wedding in Italy. It’s unclear whether it rained there, it’s unimportant. This is not a marriage report. Not about cricket or cinema either, though it could quite easily meander into those worlds that the two inhabit. This is a happiness report.
There doesn’t seem to be much of that in these mudslinging election times that we find ourselves in. It appears for some time now, that we are in a constant state of election. That no sooner was 2014 done, the preparations for 2019 started.
Somewhere through all of that, Virat Kohli played his cricket, scored his centuries, won India games, won our hearts, won Anushka Sharma’s heart; and appeared to have lost it for a bit, then won it back again - it was akin to Virat scoring in the first game of a three match series, India winning, Virat not scoring in the second game, India losing, followed by that big comeback - Virat scoring big, India winning big, India winning the series 2-1.
Appears there’s a victory in this wedding. From the buildup onwards. The getting away to Italy. It gave the rumour mills just enough to mull about. It gave Virat’s coach from childhood, enough to say, that he’s off for his nephew’s wedding. Nephew is an important character in Indian cricket. When you can’t take names, or the discredit, invariably a nephew appears. Ask Suresh. But who knows, maybe Virat is like a nephew to his coach, being like a son is too hack, Indian cricket is anything but that.
So, on to coach’s nephew’s wedding we were hurled with the first photographs. Even the ultimate battleground, Twitter was happy. And funny. And over-the-top. The Virat-Anushka wedding tamed Twitter in a witty, domesticated, acceptable to everybody, from your grandparents to your kids, to who knows, even you. Were you not happy?
Even I found myself tweeting about something other than cricket. A cricket Twitter girl wanted to have a closer look at Anushka’s wedding outfit. Another dude, took a dig at the Manyavar campaign going too far. There were marriage goals out there. It was all happening, just on the basis of two photographs. Even though the pictures were different, the tweeted text was the same. It was like a wedding had taken place on Twitter, and not in Italy. At least that’s where all their fans were rocking it, it’s where the social media spirits were high, where the adrenaline was pumped.
But there will be life after this wedding, cricket and cinema too. And that’s where those in the media won’t be able to help themselves. It’s too easy not to. In a way, this wedding may have defined what is spoken and written about Virat Kohli and Indian cricket for a while now. It’ll be lazy journalism, hell, it won’t even be journalism, but it will inevitably happen.
The away series in South Africa starts first week January 2018. Expect more than Virat’s team, Virat’s marriage to be examined. Sports journalism will take a break through the series, the tabloids will take over - if Virat scores, the marriage is doing him good, if he doesn’t, suggestions will be made that Anushka needs to work on Virat’s leaving the ball outside off. It is inevitable, and it’s part of the crummy price that stardom pays.
Going by the sheer joy that Virat’s cricket has given us, his well-wishers will far exceed the tacky headline hunters. Only a short while back I read what the astrologers had to say of their union. Union Carbide may have gotten away, but no way these two will be allowed to - they have an accountability to the Indian public, far more than our politicians, much more than our industries. Forget climate-change, what about Kohli-change?
Without knowing it, these two may have just put Tuscany on the Indian tourists’ map. Their marriage is the ultimate Tuscan advert - the very translation of Bernardo Bertolucci’s Stealing Beauty into every Indian language. Who knows, Italy too may have become far more acceptable to Indians in the last 24 hours. And their marriage venue, a shrine. How long before the likes of Pan Parag push for sponsorship of Borgo Finocchieto (a mere Rs 13.5 lakh per night to put some billboards in bedrooms). Naturally, Kohli will their brand-ambassador.
When we’re done with Tuscany, we’ll have our greatest sport’s pursuit take over again - Virat versus Sachin. Only this time, there will be an updated twist, who performed better after marriage. Yes, that tacky line will make an oft-repeated headline. The first line of copy will be a “nudge-nudge, not between the sheets, silly, but between those 22 yards”. Fence sitters will hold their horses - "It’s wrong to compare Sachin and Virat, they both were married in different eras." But some wild beasts will be let loose - "Already Kohli has scored more centuries in his first year of marriage, he could well be the greatest married player ever - and an inspiration for others to enter into holy matrimony."
It was once just a game. Now, it’s so much more. It’s their life. Here’s to some restraint, however difficult it might me. Let’s talk about his runs, his captaincy, her acting, her films. It’s rained in Delhi. Breathe. And let them be too.

Jadeja asks for permission to spend honeymoon in Lions’ dugout

by Gaurav Sethi

Ravindra Jadeja, who spent most of his adult cricketing life under the watchful gaze of MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina, is now feeling the pangs of separation. Married in Rajkot to his lady love, Riva Solanki, the southpaw missed his team, Gujarat Lions’ match on Saturday. Even though the Lions didn’t miss Jadeja’s four overs, it was in the dugout that his quiet demeanour was missed.

Thankfully, for both Jadeja and his pride of Lions, Gujarat’s next match is in Rajkot.  An unusually vocal Jadeja couldn’t hide his excitement, “I have never played cricket as a married man before. I am sure marriage will help my performance in the middle. I have already asked my wife and Suresh bhai (Raina) for permission”

When asked what permission was he implying, Jadeja was somewhat cagey but spilled the beans, “During the IPL, you know, we don’t get time to breathe so celebrating married life toh door ki baat hai (is farfetched) and I have only got married on Sunday so it is not easy this separation. I have to play in the middle and I have to...” Jadeja shyly looked at his feet not adding any more.

It turns out, Lions’ captain, Suresh Raina (also recently married) has agreed to allow Jadeja’s wife into the team dugout. “I know what Jaddu is going through. After marriage, my wife had to return to the Netherlands where she’s holding a job. I had to hold the bat here. It was not easy. Thank god for whatsapp and facebook messenger we stayed in touch through our separation. MS was a big support through this time. PK (Praveen Kumar) abused me a lot when I was feeling down, he helped me become a man with his gaali galoj”

Jadeja has received support from former CSK teammate, DJ Bravo, who was in charge of Jadeja’s sangeet where he taught everyone to dance to the “Champion” song. Bravo also created a special remix where he reworked the lyrics of the song:

RA Jadeja,
RA Jadeja,
RA Jadeja,
RA Jadeja,

Champion, Champion,
Champion, Champion,
Champion, Champion,

Everybody knows.. Say Jadeja a Champion,

Champion, Champion,
Champion, Champion,
Champion, Champion,

Everybody knows Riva is a Champion,
Jadeja, a Champion,
Dhoni, a Champion,
Raina is a Champion,
Ashwin is a Champion,
Baz is a champion
Hussey is Champion,
Faf is a champion,
Don’t forget Srini,
Nehra a champion, Smith a champion,
Badree a Champion,
Ishwar a champion,
Negi a Champion,
Haydos, a champion,

Champion Champion Champion Champion Champion,
Everybody knows say Jadeja a champion,,
Champion Champion Champion Champion Champion Champion,
Everybody knows MS Dhoni is a champion,

Champion we are real Champion,
Champion we are real Champion,
Champion we are real Champion,

Don’t vex if your name not call,
We have to leave time to bat some ball,
We love Garba and Dandiya,
We love cricket and Dandiya,
From ah dancing , ah my name your call,

Champion, Champion,
Every CSK and every Lions’ man,
Champion, Champion,
Every Chennai and Every Rajkot,

Champion, Champion,
Every CSK and every Lions’ man,
Champion Champion

The wedding reception was in keeping with Jadeja’s IPL franchise name, Gujarat Lions: a wedding planner created a “Wild Night” theme, a cinema hall was booked out for a private screening of The Jungle Book. Much to everyone’s amusement, the ushers were dressed as Mowgli in a red loin cloth. It was a vegetarian affair with a juice bar in the shape of a machan serving mocktails with names like “red flower anaar juice”, “Akela banana shake” and “Bagheera’s Black Currant shake”, all inspired by the movie.

As for the real honeymoon, it’s being planned after the IPL. Jadeja and his wife are planning a trip with Raina and his wife to the Netherlands. Teamwork at its best.

(However plausible this may sound, this is largely a work of fiction.)

"Will Preity Zinta still hug us after she's married?"

by Gaurav Sethi

A distraught KXIP player speaks up
For most editions, Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) has owned the lower berths of the Indian Premier League (IPL) table rankings. On the few occasions that KXIP turned a certain defeat into a victory, co-owner Preity Zinta’s joy knew no bounds nor did her hugs. Falling short of hugging the lamppost, the lovely lady hugged all and sundry in the squad including the masseur and his massage table.
Then came along IPL 7; KXIP’s season to beat all seasons. Preity had her arms full. The players were nothing short of ecstatic. Psychologist, Sukhinder Singh Mann, cited a direct correlation between Preity’s hugs and the players’ performances on the field – “Video footage has shown, immediately after a KXIP victory, even before Ms Zinta starts to hug the match winners, players on the bench inflict themselves on her in the hope of winning a hug. No doubt she obliges but only after she gives the match winners a bear hug – her hugs are nothing short of jhappis between old yaars, very desi and full of love and affection. There is both a healing touch and hotness to it. We must understand these are young players out there and being appreciated by their lovely owner is the icing on the cake...I will go so far as to say, it is both the cake and the icing. Must admit, in Mohali I too have been hugged by Ms Zinta, I felt like man of the match, correction man of the series haha”
Now it turns out, Preity Zina will tie the knot with a certain Gene Goodenough. Plagued by punsters all his life, Mr Goodenough refused to comment whether he thought he was good enough for a Bollywood star like Preity Zinta. Instead, he lost his shirt asking the reporter whether he was the same guy who keeps asking Dhoni when he plans to retire. There were no more questions.
Arguably most pained by Preity Zinta’s marriage plan was a player (who requested not to be named but referred to as a Perennially Benched Player (PBP)). Deeply distraught by the latest marriage announcements, he said, “As a benched player, nothing was more important to me than the team winning. Not because I cared for our victory, but because I longed for a hug from Preity. My ass hurts sitting on the bench match after match, I now know what Manoj Tiwary felt all this while. But he doesn’t know what I feel when I am hugged by Preity. I’m really scared now, if Preity gets married to Gene, will I be no longer good enough for a hug?”
New KXIP skipper, David Miller refused to comment but wished Preity the best for her hugs...er marriage.  Star batsman, Glenn Maxwell, said some of the Indian players who are milestone driven, actually count the number of times Preity has hugged them, but as an Aussie he just likes to give it his all and not count how many times the two have hugged.
Newly appointed KXIP mentor, Virender Sehwag said he was a married man with two sons and did not like talking about hugging women. “What Preity Zinta does is Preity Zinta’s business, if she likes hugging players to show her goodwill then that is her business.” Answering another inane question, Sehwag was deadpan as ever, “No, I have not met her fiancé so I cannot say whether he is good enough for her.”
Finally, Preity Zinta put an end to all speculation by saying she thought the man in her life was good enough for her. “And no, nothing can stop me from hugging my players. And Gene is not the jealous kind, but he did say somewhat sarcastically, ‘Preity, tell me darling, is cricket a contact sport?’ haha”
Priety was all smiles and dimples. You could tell the press in waiting was dying for a hug.
(However plausible this might sound, this is largely a work of fiction.)
