though not a big fan of bangladesh cricket who i think are over-living their 'infancy' status... but i sincerely beleive that deshis should replace the bunch that is called west indies team these days... in champions trophy...
icc on various occasions has proudly stated that they view champions trophy as one of their premier tournaments... they are also hoping that the tournament will revive spectators' interest in odi games but still allow the west indies cricket board to send not even their second best team... so much for the prestige of a 'premier' tournament...
their punch line for marketing this champions trophy is... 8 teams 15 games 1 champion... something of that sort...
so one can straight away discount three games from this as the team representing west indies will play three games for sure... against the likes of pakistan, australia and india... turning up to be mauled ruthlessly... to make-up some cricketer's stats look overly fat... in short buffet cricket would never be better...
and icc is hoping that this will revive our interest in ODIs...?
one can argue that even bangladesh can be mauled the same way... but sir... if they manage an upset as they have beaten all the teams featured in group 'A' in past... assuming they replace west indies in group 'A'... at least this will take bangladesh cricket further... specially after they are already boasting of their recent first test series win on this very team...
where will an upset take this west indies team...?
swap west indies with bangladesh in champions trophy...

I like that idea. Bangladesh are more likely to pull an upset, even one will add spice. WI got mauled by SA in the warm ups. SA scored 388!
As for the ODIs are boring tagline, I don't really buy that. There are some folks who are bored of the slam-bang T20 or don't appreciate the huge impact that luck can have in T20. ODIs need "real skill" and patience. You've got to maneuver the middle overs between 20-40.
i too am of your opinion that odis are good in current form what they require some tweaking an nothing else but that's another post...
but seeing wi getting mauled by one and all will arm the odi's critics even more...
SP, the last line, "where will an upset take this West Indies team?" says it all.
At least two Windies games, I'll give a miss. We can start a campaign against the West Indies' team but that will be giving them more attention than they deserve.
nc... sometimes we need to give attention to filth too... otherwise it will spread faster than swine flu... tomorrow any board can make mockery of worldcup by sending a team that may not be fit even to play timbuktu...
I think its high time the spineless ICC takes a tough stand or else the day is not far when WI will join Kenya and Zimbabwe.
As far as Bangladesh is concerned, it is the right time when they should be given a chance to compete with tough teams in Champions Trophy ... as even a win will inspire them further.... keep walking!!!
welcome anorak...
do you still beleive icc will do something on this issue... but ultimate losers of this impotency are teams like bangladesh...
good idea but then BD too are inconsistent rookies. new players thrown in the ring and disappear too soon!!
what good did victories against India and SA in World cup did to them ?
dont know but they are no different from current West Indies
Sameer, I beg to differ. When our victories against India and SA came, we didn't expect it. Our players were terribly young, still getting over the fact that they are actually playing against the same people they grew up idolizing. That and the lack of self belief.
It's not an excuse. I agree with SP, our stay in the infancy stage has dragged out for too long. But the view on cricket has changed in Bangladesh. New players are coming in and seeing it as a serious career prospect. Something that was not there before. I don't think the Windies care much about cricket anymore. Nobody shows up to their games, players don't get paid well and they simply don't give a crap about playing for their country. Something the first XI is proving to the world. If Bangladesh were given this chance they would have taken it as an opportunity for growth. The Windies wouldn't.
I agree Bangladesh should've been included in the CT. Weak team or not at least they care about ODI cricket unlike the English (who only care about the Ashes). And the less said about the Windies, the better.
Here is what Dileep P wrote on his blog:
As for poor Bangladesh, they continue to be the ugly sister of international cricket. Their win percentage (15 from 40 games) is better than both England and West Indies, and a couple of their players, especially the outstanding Shakib Al Hasan, would walk into both sides. Instead, they must watch events in South Africa from the sidelines, while two mind-numbingly mediocre sides make up the numbers.
That pretty much sums it up.
Looking at the way they are getting hammered, This a welcome Idea. Bangla at the moment look far superior than the toothless WI team for CT.
WI Cricket is gettin marred by Contract/Pay issues. ICC is showing a blind eye on this issue, dont they solve this soon, as said above we can join WI in Zim & Kenya list + we shall get another Free9lance) cricketer - Chris Gayle :D
thanks SAMeer...
as i said that the recently won test series playing on the soil of this very WI team... that's is straight away the difference another reason is why not give place to the one who values it...?
indeed purna...
what earlier used to be fun or timepass sports for deshis now looks serious prospects to them...
with the emergence of players like tamim, shakib, mortaza they are no walk overs and any team can only take them lightly at their own peril...
giving this WI assurity of playing in champions trophy is not only waste of a place but diluting own 'premier' brand...
indeed leela...
it pretty much sums it up... the wi playing in CT is wrong at so many levels that you can start from anywhere... :)
icc's approach is baffling sujan...
they are content at playing the ostrich to wi problems and at the times when cricket itself is facing so many threats... they should avoid at least act fast on clear and present danger... but they too are as toothless as this wi team...
No Shakib, No Razzaq. Sad to see quality players miss out. But something had to be done to make the tournament not boring as the world cup.
WI apparently do have time to change the squad but they are not going to. Gayle and co. will play in their next series.
Now how motivated will the current side be.
exactly scorpy...
the current wi players know they are already fighting a lost battle already... once the men are ready boys will have to make way for them...
