Inside Chris Gayle's book of baby names

by Gaurav Sethi

Blush is for girl, Brag is for boy.

If you thought you knew Chris Henry Gayle, then you got another thing coming. The whole, “Don't blush, baby!” episode is still pretty fresh in Gayle's mind, not yours?

After hitting the Hobart Hurricanes for 41 off 15 balls in The Big Bash, Chris Gayle decided to hit on TV interviewer, Mel McLaughlin. Not one for subtleties, Gayle got stuck right away: "I wanted to come and have an interview with you as well. That's the reason why
I'm here, just to see your eyes for the first time. It's nice so hopefully we can win this game and have a drink after. Don't blush, baby."

Right, so you get the drift. It takes some cheek after all that to name your daughter, Blush. Not if you're Chris Gayle. You are #WorldBoss So you tell yourself and so says all of us. Now what if Gayle has a son, what do you think he'll name him? What's on top of Chris Gayle's mind?  In addition to Chris Gayle, here are some possibilities:

1. Mallya: The Gayle-Mallya relationship, whatever it was, was oddly special. Mallya invested more of himself in Gayle than he did in all his companies combined. And Gayle by the look of it, partied way harder in the IPL with RCB than he did in the Caribbean. Not far flung then that Gayle names his son Mallya, Vijay or even Dr for that matter. Don't put it beyond Gayle to call him Dr Vijay Mallya or Dr Dolittle as a dig at Mallya.

By that same logic, he could also name his son, Siddhrath Dolittle though unlikely. Of course all this sounds a little tame. A more logical or in Gayle's case, illogical name could be...

2. Kingfisher: After Blush, I'm beginning to get a sense of Gayle's outlandish naming trajectory. If he's thinking cricket leagues and all like he was with Blush, then RCB's bound to be up there, and I bet that Kingfisher jingle runs in his head all the time, don't put it beyond him to call the boy, King Fisher. Going by that thinking or lack of, RCB too is a possibility – Roy Chall Banga , yeah, he could stop at that to give the name some reggae rhythms.

3. Champion: The World T20 was a big, big deal for the West Indies as was DJ Bravo's “Champion” song. Highly possible that when the baby boy comes along, he'll be young master Champion. Or the way they were pronouncing it, could be the way he calls and spells it – Chaaamp-yun.

4. In batting order – sticking with the World T20 triumph, Chris Gayle not one for half measures, could name the boy after the whole team (in batting order, starting with Daddy Gayle) Chris Johnson Marlon Lendl Dwayne Andre Darren Carlos Denesh Samuel Sulieman – of course, the other ten players' names could be one helluva long middle name, so Chris Jr's name could be – Chris JMLDADCDSS Gayle Jr. Guess Gayle Jr won't have any dearth of God Fathers. Just by virtue of his long name, the boy could be eligible for Sri Lankan cricket.

5. Kingston: Proud Jamaican that he is, not beyond Gayle to name his boy either Kingston or Jamaica. Or even Port of Spain where he made his Test debut. Also don’t rule out Gayle calling his son Toronto (where he made his ODI debut) or Auckland (where he played his first T20I).

6. T20: Chris Gayle is possibly the ultimate T20 gun for hire. At last count, he had played for more T20 franchises than there were. Some of the teams he’s played for: Barisal Burners, Dhaka Gladiators, Jamaica Tallawahs, Kolkata Knight Riders, Lahore Qalandars, Matabeleland Tuskers, Melbourne Renegades, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Somerset, Stanford Superstars, Sydney Thunder, Western Australia, Worcestershire. Depending on whimsy, the poor boy could be named anything from Qalandar to Thunder.

7. Brag: Just as pink is for girls, blue is for boys, so too “Blush” is for girl, “Brag” is for boy. Keep-it-simple-stupid, this is Chris Gayle. Stereotype it. It’s kid-naming, not rocket science. It seems highly possible, that when Blush’s little bro comes along, he’ll be called Brag. Nothing will be cooler for #worldboss Chris Gayle, and he does like a joke, no matter on whom or what. As for Gayle’s reaction, it’ll be a succinct LOLZ.

Next thing you know, the IPL will welcome Gayle back with a lady interviewer. Expect anything. Even a rehearsed, “Don’t blush, baby!”

Chris Gayle announces retirement to join Retired Cricket League

by Gaurav Sethi

One of the prerequisites of the Masters Champions League (MCL), a T20 tournament for retired cricketers is that players must be retired, more specifically, they must be former international cricketers - retired from all forms of the professional sport. When Chris Gayle got wind of this, he drafted possibly the shortest retirement letter in cricket history:
Chief, gotta go XXX Chris lol
But before he could send it to the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) chief, he gave it a second thought and sent it to his Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper, Virat Kohli, a man of letters and 11,000 word interviews.
Virat:
Dear Chris,
I have read and re-read your letter to the chief. I have a few questions: Who is this chief? Where are you going - re: "gotta go"? Please do elaborate, and once I have a better grasp of the unknown, I hope to be in a better position to assist you with your letter. Let's finish this together, like one of our Indian Premier League (IPL) chases.
Sincerely,
Virat
Gayle:
VK thanxxx lol
Virat:
Dear Chris,
It appears you fired the mail off by mistake, awaiting your reply, eagerly.
Sincerely,
Virat
Gayle:
VK LOLetter 2 WICB boss chief I GO 2 retirement to play in retirement desert league HOT sand castle meltdown sing by americano bar live by the candy jill come lately gotta go XXX
Virat:
Dear Chris,
Thanks so much for your reply. From your reply I gather the following, correct me if I'm wrong: Your letter is addressed to Mr Dave Cameron, the WICB chief and you're looking for an opportunity to retire from all international cricket so you can further your cricket career in the Emirates. If I'm not mistaken this is the Masters Champions League (MCL), a franchise T20 tournament for retired cricketers set to take place no later than February the following year.
Your friend,
Virat
Gayle:
YO VK LOL XXX
Virat:
Dear Chris,
I wish you the very best in your latest adventure. Please do consider using some of the text from my previous mail in your letter to Mr Cameron.
Your 4 am friend,
Virat
Here is what Chris Gayle mailed the WICB chief, Dave Cameron:
Chief gotta go XXX Chris lol DIG THIS LOL >>>>>>>>>>>
Dear Chris,
Thanks so much for your reply.
Your friend,
Virat
And WICB chief Dave Cameron's mail to Gayle:
Dear Mr Gayle,
And then people wonder why Chris Gayle and the WICB have a communication problem? I have CCed this mail to Virat Kohli who I predict will be a tad more selective in his choice of words. We cannot accept your retirement from international cricket simply because the WICB does not accept anything that you wish to do.
Warm regards,
Dave Cameron

Following this, Chris Gayle was selected for Australia's tour of the West Indies. If the player failed to fulfil his international commitments, the WICB would not accept his resignation from international cricket.
Playing in the NatWest T20 Blast in England, Gayle was unaffected by these latest developments. Instead, he set his eyes on Sachin Tendulkar and Shane Warne's Legends T20 Cricket League to be held in the United States of America (USA).
It had been a rewarding day so far, Gayle was on the verge of entering into talks with two new T20 leagues. JXTRA Honeycomb as he called her made him a mojito and put his shades on; he always liked his shades on when he sipped his mojito. "Never know when prying eyes may decide to go click click photo bomb me LOL," he would often say. "Daddy be ready for new T20 and photo bomber tombstone blues LOL."
As he sipped, he tried to remember, how many had he played with? Could he remember them all? And he started reciting them one by one - Jamaica! LOL! Jamaica Tall-wahs LMAO! Barista Burners! LOL! WATA NAME! No silly Wata name not-a-name but Barista Burners wata name - serve me Ice Latte while I swing sexy LOL! KKR! KKR! Wata royal pain in my royal a** - never let me do my cool thing, drool on bowling swing out sista LOL! Boring English too good too Somerest Mom I read finally Mamma be happy Stanford Superstars quick bang bang buck so sexy idiot man sailor thief LOL! Matabeleland Tuskers oh baby talk to me dirty LOL Sydney feel my Thunder Down Under LMAO Western Australia... Big flies eat my eyes silly in Perth LOL... It appeared Chris Gayle had crashed for the night but not before he had sent Tendulkar and Warne a quick mail.
"USA LOL!"
(However plausible this might sound, this is a work of fiction.)

Chanderpaul Stands Firm

by achettup

April 9th 1994
In his third test, Chanders is in a star-studded West Indian side
They've crushed England and taken the five match series 3-0 already
But in the 4th test England fight back, and the West Indies begin to collapse
Chanders enters at number 6, with the score on 126
Gus Fraser rips through taking 3 wickets at that score
The English snarl, "Get out little man"
But Chanderpaul stands firm
He battles and battles, and ends up with 77 and takes the Windies to a respectable 304
The Windies lose the match, but it would not be the last time Shiv glued an innings together

May12th 2003
The Windies and Australia have an identical 240 on the board after an innings each
Australia then roar to 417 after centuries by both openers
The Windies are 4/165 when Chanders comes in as Lara is dismissed
With Sarwan, with whom he would share many brilliant partnerships, he stitches together a century
Its too much for the snarling Australians as McGrath gets into a famous heated spat with Sarwan,
At the end of the day, Sarwan is dismissed for a century,
but Chanders stands firm and is unbeaten on his 100
The Windies complete a memorable win the next day, the highest chase in Test History

June 10th-11th 2007
Chasing an improbable 455 to win against England at Manchester
The Windies are reduced to 3-88 in the 32nd over of the second innings
Chanders walks in, as the English sledge "Just leave little man"
But Chanderpaul stands firm and he bats and bats and bats,
100 overs later, the Collymore is dismissed and England win by 60 runs
Chanders is unbeaten on 127*, Runako Morton's 54 is the next highest score
The West Indies failed in the first innings too, Chanders was the only batsman to cross 50

April 10th 2008
Sri Lanka collapse and recover in an ODI to post a respectable 235
Chanderpaul walks in with the Windies placed comfortably at 3/109 off 28 overs
And watches them collapse, he is still there when No.11 Fidel Edwards walks out
The score is 219 and the Windies need 17 off 7 balls, he slams the last ball of the over for 4
The wily Vaas concedes 3 runs off the first 4 balls as the Windies need 10 off 2 balls
"Give it up little man" but Chanderpaul stands firm
He smashes a 4 past mid-off and and then hits a full toss into the stands at mid-wicket

14th November 2008
Chasing 232 against Pakistan, Chanders comes in 2/14, after both openers are dismissed for ducks
Along with, who else but again that man, Sarwan he steadies the ship,
But Sarwan falls for 45 and the West Indies are failing again
For 44 overs Chanerpaul stands firm, defying the Pakistani bowlers
Wickets fall around him, as they have so many times in the past
As they will continue to fall around him in the future
When Gul bowls Lionel Baker, the Pakistanis triumph by 24 runs
That the Windies had hopes until that moment can only be because of Chander's defiance
He's not out on 107, more than half the team's total score

May 2015
In the dying light of a spectacular career, Chanders watches the West Indies in turmoil
But it isn't just their batsmen this time, its their administration
As it has been for over a decade
The legends ask him to retire, "Its time to leave little man"
But Chanderpaul stands firm, defiant to the very end
He will not retire and leave the team in the hands of those who will fail again
They drop him, but Chanderpaul still stands firm
After all those years, maybe it is the only thing he knows

A Tribute to the Bajans

by Mahek

The world may know Barbados as the land of beautiful beaches and famous sprinters, but to the cricketing world it is the country that might possibly have the greatest ever All-Time Test XI. I have only had the pleasure of watching two of their greats - Malcolm Marshall and Desmond Haynes - live, and even they were nearing the end of their careers by then. Today is the last round of group matches in Barbados (There will be the final on 16th) and it seems about right to mention the greats whose names adorn the various stands at the renovated Kensington Oval.

1. Desmond Haynes
2. Gordon Greenidge
3. Everton Weekes
4. Clyde Walcott (Wk)
5. Frank Worrell (C)
6. Garfield Sobers
7. Malcolm Marshall
8. Wes Hall
9. Charlie Griffith
10. Joel Garner
11. Herman Griffith

I wonder if even Australia or England have produced cricketers in their long and illustrious history to match the class, fire and force comparable to what Barbados has produced. the quality of cricketers produced by Barbados and the Caribbean has diminished considerably in the last two decades, as can be seen from the fact that none of the aforementioned eleven have played an international match in over 16 years. However, there still are cricketers like Fidel Edwards and Kemar Roach who can turn back the clock to when the Bajans put the fear of God in the batsmen's mind. Don't believe me? Just ask Kevin Pietersen and Ricky Ponting.

I would like to end this post by asking the readers to contribute whatever anecdotes or incidents they might have heard, read or seen from these cricketing giants. I tried to look up a poem on the Three W's. I heard Tony Cozier recite it on Television. It would be great if someone here could dig it up and share it with us.

swap west indies with bangladesh in champions trophy...

by straight point

though not a big fan of bangladesh cricket who i think are over-living their 'infancy' status... but i sincerely beleive that deshis should replace the bunch that is called west indies team these days... in champions trophy...

icc on various occasions has proudly stated that they view champions trophy as one of their premier tournaments... they are also hoping that the tournament will revive spectators' interest in odi games but still allow the west indies cricket board to send not even their second best team... so much for the prestige of a 'premier' tournament...

their punch line for marketing this champions trophy is... 8 teams 15 games 1 champion... something of that sort...

so one can straight away discount three games from this as the team representing west indies will play three games for sure... against the likes of pakistan, australia and india... turning up to be mauled ruthlessly... to make-up some cricketer's stats look overly fat... in short buffet cricket would never be better...

and icc is hoping that this will revive our interest in ODIs...?

one can argue that even bangladesh can be mauled the same way... but sir... if they manage an upset as they have beaten all the teams featured in group 'A' in past... assuming they replace west indies in group 'A'... at least this will take bangladesh cricket further... specially after they are already boasting of their recent first test series win on this very team...

where will an upset take this west indies team...?

Wasn't Bored almost right or what?!

by Ankit Poddar

When the T20 World Cup was still to begin, when the Indian team were still supposed to win, I at Bored had some observations about the teams. Read them, before you read these!
Now, weren't those right or what!

South Africa reached the semi finals on account of their experience at IPL, and then lost it, on account of the same! A case in point being Duminy's experience with MI! But more importantly they choked again! How I wish I had betted on it!

Australia found it real hard without Roy, and they are unseeded for the next T20 WC now! Of course, because it is Oz, ICC may change some of the rules before next year!

India, well, still very raw! So, let us forget it! Just let them come back, got those effigies ready!

West Indies, okay I was wrong about them!

Sri Lanka, still don't like their outfits!

But Pakistan! Yes, so right about them! They had lost both their warm ups and are now into the Finals of T20 World Cup! Hail their inconsisntency!

Fake One down Player

by RajaB

This is the release he had promised us at BCC!, the one he promised that we would exclusively have...

"I have been misinterpreted again, it was the new media this time. Let me clarify, I have not changed a bit since I heard my Dadi telling me "I am Brahmasmi".

I know I am

I would neither change ever or I would admit. If at all there comes a time I have to, I will bring in all 15 and divert the issue.

Let me clarify one more thing. I wasn't at loggerheads with Jatman at any point in time. If I were at loggeheads with him then I would not have called him for that all team press conference. The fact that he was present proves that he is not my competition. (Thank god you didn't notice the absence of Dinesh Karthik in the original squad)

I am thinking of not keeping today, two reasons for that. One, I am the captain and therefore the precedent suggests that I either be at the slip or in covers, throwing up my arm for every ball that would pass me. Second, I have a second wicketkeeper and it is Dinesh Karthik, so I wouldn't drop any behind the stumps.

Well, it is time I finished this release... I need to take some quality time out for myself. The winners of the ball before THE ball, the call before the CALL (of toss), and all those who score me monies before I score anything with a piece of wood are waiting.

Let me close with clarifying one point from that previous new media release...

It quoted me saying, Jatman is a friend. Let me reiterate he is and he would be.

On Facebook, from now on. See you (only) on Facebook Jatman, bye !!

And see you guys too. I would talk to you guys after I win my match against the West Indies..."

West Indies Vs Australia - Achettup's Moment

by achettup

Obviously everyone's moments will include one or the other, maybe all of Gayle's massive sixes. No exception here. But we need a few distinct moments outside of that breathtaking innings and I'm going to pick a similar strike by young David Warner. In a star studded line-up, the little beefy Aussie played the best innings and helped Australia move on from a disastrous start to reasonable position from where David Hussey cut loose. I choose Warner's meaty six that landed in the Tennis courts that got the commentary boxes buzzing... for it was nothing but an ominous sign and none picked what was about to follow.

The T20 Carnival begins tomorrow!

by Ankit Poddar

Yeah, Bored was live last night, and I was one of those on the panel! I mention this, cause our moderators deserve a special thanks! It must have been one hell of a task for them!

So, the warm up matches are over, including the India-Pakistan warm up final! It is time for the T20 carnival to begin!

A quick look at the teams:

Ireland, Scotland, Netherlands, Bangladesh: The group of upsetters! It would be fun to watch, whose party they spoil!

Australia: Andrew Symonds has been sent back home! So reports Achettup! The Oz T20 teams now looks like those racist blokes really in need of some proteins, wait that could send all of them back, ala Warney!

South Africa: Any side that has benefited the most from the IPL, apart from India, in terms of match practice, it is these guys. Guess, CSA has a certain BRC management to thank!

New Zealand: Their reaching the semi finals is almost a given! After all it is an ICC tournament! Can't bet on it though! Want to bet on Saffers choking instead?

England and West Indies: Are very happy with winning against each other! May get out of the WC as soon as it begins! Of course, you know that!

Pakistan: They have lost both their warm up matches, so they are going a long way in this World Cup, on account of their inconsistency!

Sri Lanka: I hate their team outfits!

India: One loss, one win! Against somebody they have never won against, against somebody they have never lost any! Yeah, you can't comment much on their form! But they are the defending champions!

All that I would now add, Aane De!

Happy Bored Day Black Bradman

Happy B'day George Headley. Ironical that on his birthday I ask you to read his obituary. And enjoy little nuggets like 'His devoted admirers responded by calling Bradman the white Headley'. Video killed the radio song

by Gaurav Sethi

And why don’t you say it, IPL killed the Anglo-Indies test series. How many if any balls did you watch? Did you even know there was a test series on? Was it even a test series? What was it called? In a valiant effort to save a test, only three Windies brittle-men scored more than the innings’ extras of 18. Do you want to know? That when the West Indies of the IPL will be on in less than an hour. Incredible, but the IPL losers are by far the most exciting team to watch. Once upon a time that was the Windies, earnest in defeat. Not any more though. It’s tough to watch the dead play. Even if you loved them.

Please Tell Me You're Not Serious

by achettup

We're going half way around the world, to play four ODIs on grounds that are famous for the lack of concern and effort Chinese construction companies have for developing anything related to the sport? This in a year when we will play another stupid 7 match ODI series against the Aussies, the Champions Trophy, the T-20 World Cup not to mention the IPL and Champions League.

The first two tests of the Eng-WI series were exciting, the last one only got a little bit exciting in the last couple of sessions. Otherwise it was one heck of a boring tour. Even like that, I see no point in a team going all the way to the Windies for a bilateral ODI series. Looking at this schedule after this series in NZ we will next play a test in November against SL (3 matches) and then 2 against the mighty TIGER CRICKET minnows, Bangaldesh.

I was really glad when the BCCI decided to add an extra test to the NZ series. But the truth is our schedule is so packed with these stupid, meaningless, bilateral ODI matches that there is no room for tests. And don't get me started with the Champions Trophy, it was a stupid tournament last year when it never took place and I don't honestly know how many people want it this time around. Somebody please tell me that the schedule for the series in the WI is incomplete and they're still working on it. Its right after the T20 World Cup, and the Windies have a series against Bangladesh just after that too.

One Year, One day – The micro-miniskirt view

by Bored Member

by Raja Baradwaj

Post the miniskirt view appeared, there have been a flurry of comments. Wasim & Q tried dissecting the miniskirt for a better view, here I am with some more statistics to support what I posted yesterday.

To start with let us see what our experts said…

1. Your post shows only the % of matches Pakistan played against the minnows…

2. 2008 was an unusual year for Pakistan because not many countries came in to play cricket here…

3. If a team can lose to Bangladesh / Zimbabwe they sure would lose to Pakistan…

4. You say Pakistan top the % wins table but conclude they didn’t play good cricket…

5. If you take the minnows match off the Pakistan list, why don’t you do the same for the other countries also…

6. Pakistan beat India in a tournament final some while ago, does it count here?

So gentlemen the numbers again…

Before we get in there, I apologise for having left Sri Lanka out of the analysis yesterday. And for having termed the sheet a comprehensive list of full member nations. I am sure the Sri Lankan supporters (if any) would be more peeved now, for showing these figures than they were yesterday.

What do we see?

a) ODI record for a year, dating back from their latest ODI appearance (3rd ODI in Abu Dhabi has not been taken into consideration)

b) The results against the minnows, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Hong Kong, Scotland, Kenya, Ireland, Bermuda have not been considered as long as the stronger team won it. In some cases where the minnows won (New Zealand – Bangladesh) the results have been included

c) Another addition to the sheet is the % matches played at home

The numbers say…

1. Even after discounting the minnows record, we can see that Pakistan have played cricket, 9 matches to be precise. As opposed to 13 by South Africa. Not bad at all if you asked me

2. When the minnows go out, Pakistan have a 56% win record, again not bad if you saw this in isolation but if you look at it in conjunction with what we call the top teams have, then the story is different.

3. If you look at the % of matches lost, then Pakistan are near the top. Only West Indies and Sri Lanka beat Pakistan here.

4. If you look at the % of matches each team played at home, you can see that more teams have toured Pakistan for a ODI series than they came to India, Sri Lanka & New Zealand.

My take…

The table above has the list of matches all the other teams played in their last one year, with the exception of the matches against the minnows.

Pakistan beating India in the Asia cup finals have definitely been taken into consideration.

Many countries didn’t tour Pakistan, therefore they didn’t play enough cricket: This according to me would be the biggest farce the Pakistani cricket establishment has been propagating in the last year or so. Their good friends at ICC – India & Sri Lanka also have not got many teams coming in to play cricket in their soil. But the difference why they played more is because they toured more. I am not sure why Pakistan didn’t tour enough.

If a team can lose to Bangladesh / Zimbabwe I am sure Pakistan could beat them: One look at the % of non minnow matches lost makes me think otherwise. As Sidhu would say “If ifs and ands are like pots and pans, there would be no tinkers”

With this, I am sure the debate would get bigger & better, keep it coming folks. Interesting times ahead for statistics & Pakistani cricket (let’s hope).

PS: The data used came in from the great guys, cricinfo. Apologies for not having credited them yesterday, I should have.

One year, One day – The miniskirt view!!

by Bored Member

by Raja Baradwaj

When Navjot Sidhu said “Statistics are like miniskirts, they reveal more than what they hide”, he didn’t know that a lots of South Indians especially the Tamils were going to hate him for life. For, he revealed our best kept trade secret. We Tamils love statistics (Maths, in general) as much as we like miniskirts, the arousal factor is why.

I should thank Soulberry, Straight Point and Naked Cricket (arousal factor, remember!!) for making me look at the statistics. For one moment I thought I had my foot in mouth, having filed the story. But then Q was a bit reassuring, to say that I wasn’t wrong but absolutely off tangent!! I thought why not look into the miniskirt, err statistics? May be there was another interesting / revealing angle there?

So here I am with some interesting numbers.

Stats thanks to cricinfo

What do we see?

I have tried to look at each full member nations ODI record for an year, dating back from their latest ODI appearance

1. The matches each team played, the wins, losses, matches without any results

2. The runs scored by them in that period, the number of overs played and the run rate

3. Their Win – Loss ratio with respect to the total number of ODIs played, when they batted first and when they batted second

Takeouts

a) Number of games played:

England played the least number of games in one year, 17 games

Australia played the maximum, 28 games

Pakistan played 22, and they played the minnows (Bangladesh, Zimbabwe & Hongkong) 13 times and obviously they won each of those 13

b) Number of Wins

Overall Pakistan has the best of Win – Loss % - 81.82% wins. But 72% of the wins came from beating the minnows

Aussies have a 76% win record. Then come the Springboks, the black caps and the Indians

West Indies languish at the bottom of the table, this is in spite of the fact that they had the second maximum number of matches played against the minnows. Unfortunately the loss in the hands of Zimbabwe in Harare makes their records even sorer.

c) Number of loses

As expected it is West Indies & England who occupy the top of the table (for once they would be happy they are on top)

Surprisingly India come third (overall). If you ignore Pakistan's win against the minnows then they go to position 4 and Pakistan come 3

Pakistan are champs if you consider their overall record, with only 18% loses in the year. If their record against the minnows is ignored, even then they score a respectable 40%

d) Run rate

Pakistan top the list irrespective of minnows or monoliths

Aussies have the third lowest of run rates, but still have a better win – loss record. Do we remember the hare & the tortoise story?

e) Batting 1st (Vs) 2nd

Pakistan have a better record batting first (overall)

Australia are a better team as long as they bat first. They have a near dismal record batting second.

New Zealand & Pakistan (overall) are champs as long as they bat second. New Zealand seem to have a major problem setting targets.

It doesn’t matter if India bat first or second. What matters is whether they fired. This is great news for India, a team who traditionally have been relying on personalities to carry them home rather than the team.

The Pakistan conundrum

Coming back to the Pakistan story

1. Did they play as frequently as anybody else did?

The answer is yes, they played 22 ODIs. Minnows or no minnows, the ICC or MCC or any other recognized CC still count all these matches played as ODIs.

2. Did they actually play good cricket before?

The statistic says no. They did score some good wins against the Indian's and the Sri Lankan's (here & there) but those wins were just something to add up to their great records against the minnows. Something was definately lacking, Mo Yo, Ge La, Na As, Sa Ah not withstanding.

Intikhab Alam I think could prove to be the missing link the Pakistani team lacked. I am sure Q (and all the bored members) would agree when I say he is more a Javed Miandad type of coach – The hands on variety, but more savvy and noble (a Muhammad Ali as opposed to a street fighter). But he certainly is not the Chandu Borde of Pakistani cricket, before a Kristen is found. I am sure he would certainly change the complexion of Pakistani cricket if the establishment doesn’t change its.

A different tangent again

Do cricketers really bother about their cricketing careers?

That is another post by itself. I think they care a sweet fudge all, what matters for all of them is whether their cash register is ringing or not.

Do you think Mohd. Asif thinks cricket gives him a better kick than the other substances do for him to appeal again??

Do you honestly think Symonds thought of quitting cricket when he came back from fishing?
