Better to have batted and lost than to never have batted at all.

by bored cricket crazy indians

On 7th Sept. during the Corporate Trophy, SP wrote about Praveen Kumar’s batting potential here. Now look what he's gone and done.

On 9th Oct. during the Challenger series, SP wrote about Bhajji as a bowling all-rounder here. Now look what he's gone and done.

On 11th Nov. SP will write about Nehra as India’s next big late order batsman. Don't look.

Come on guys, one game doesn't make them handy batsmen. I'd take Johnson and Lee, Vettori and Mills, Morkel and ROFL over those two anyday. It's one thing to throw the bat at bad balls, it's another to do it when the opposition is bowling well, and do it time and again.

mahek you are right that one swallow does not make summer... but to have that 'one swallow' you need to have some talent as back up otherwise nehra or for that matter ishant too would have taken then apart...

what this shows that if given some responsibility and little encouragement they definitely have it in them to contribute... much like shastri who started as no.10 or 11 batsman but gavaskar spotted the talent and encouraged him... and rest you and me know what happened...

thanks sailesh...

but one thing where i differ from you is that those were not prediction... but my conviction and belief in their untapped batting talent... :)

It's one thing to encourage tailenders to take on more responsibility, it's another to herald them as potential allrounders. And why wouldn't you encourage all your players to put a price on their wicket anyway? One can hope or make predictions about Harbhajan and Kumar but an honest assessment of their ability will tell you neither of them would bat at 8 and 9 for half the international sides. I don't think there's anything in their batting that suggests they can play anything more than a cameo in ODIs.

had this be the thot we would have never discovered shastri the batsman... he would have played all his life batting at no. 10 or 11...

and if you insist on comparing with international teams like oz etc... the only team in the world who will open in test with watson will oz itself... so lets not make every judgment based on what other international teams will do or don't...

Let's have this discussion in two years time, shall we?
