t20 is a batsman's game...

by straight point

not that i had any doubts about it... neither do i envy murali vijay...

but when vijay got a century cheeka jumped up and down in ecstasy and then settled down to sigh on national tv... that had it not been for the icc rule to select t20 world cup team a month in advance... he would have picked murali vijay... without a hint of guilt...

by the same token, why not a single word for two bowlers... ojha and mishra... who are the highest wicket takers this season...?

The curious case of Yusuf Pathan

by RajaB

Despite his best efforts cooking up zeros, Yusuf remains in the Indian team. Getting all the colours right on a rubik's cube would be easier than trying to solve this puzzle of understanding why. It looked such till we got hold of a transcript of the selection committee meeting to finalize the teams for the home series against Srilanka.

Krish Srikanth: Now let us discuss allrounders…

Voice1: Sanjay Bangar, he has been doing well in Ranji recently

Voice2: Then what about Rajat Bhatia, he is younger compared to Bangar…

Voice3: And Bangar has had his chances, now we should encourage youngsters

Voice1: So what about Pathan ?

Voice2: Which one ?

Voice3: No… No what have they done of any note off late… Except appearing on TV and dancing with Fara Khan ?

Krish Srikanth: Yes… I agree. Why Pathan ?

Voice1: Cheeka you mean Y Pathan ?

Krish Srikanth: Yes, why Pathan ?

Voices (in chorus): So Cheeka you mean take him ?

Krish Srikanth: Yes take him off

Voices (in chorus): Ok we take him… Y Pathan, Y Pathan

KhufiaBaaz: The real reason for Sehwag's revolt

by KhufiaBaaz

On conditions of anonymity, here's what one of Delhi's selectors had to say:

"Sehwag is very upset with the national selectors for ignoring him for the Champions Trophy without giving him a chance to prove his fitness while Sachin is selected even when he skips the fitness test. Rahul Dravid's selection without proving either form or fitness for the ODIs was the last straw for Viru"

"He is now in talks with Cheeka, and is keen to move south till he is chief selector...all the statements of him moving to Haryana are nothing but hogwash"

RODP – Rahul, the One Down Player

by RajaB

I think they lost it

How long could they hold their horses ?

And did any one of us remember, they are accountable these days ?

Oh, silly… Not the players, I’m referring to the selectors. They are paid these days.

Well it is not that they weren’t paid all these days. But now they would have to pay taxes, the pay comes from the board, they are given a cheque and a pay slip too.

So it seems the selectors have finally realised their responsibility and have lost their cool. And they have decided to seize the brilliant opportunity that a silly recently concluded tour offered.

How ?

Finally the FODP managed to score some runs, and to his luck the others managed to emerge croppers. And most importantly FODP’s team managed to scrape though, thanks largely to the Varuna yagna they conducted in Hyderabad.

But if our sources are to be believed, the selectors have finally made the FODP understand a couple of important things about cricket

a) However hard you try, you need to have it in you to be a One Down Player

b) When we say “have it in you” we don’t mean luck or winning tosses

c) We are not also referring to the ability to score the moment the selectors decide to write you a memo on non performance

d) And whaadoucal … that guy still has it in him. And he showed it in the IPL 2

And so what do we do…

Call back the RODP to bolster our shaky top order batting. He can pull, hook, drop, drive on all kinds of surfaces. Grassy, greasy, placid, dry, bare and he can even perform on surfaces that are cracked.

The highly cracked surface the Indian cricket team is today or at least its top order batting it needs this man who can plaster it.

So please welcome* Rahul Dravid – The Real One Down Player. At last that position (One Down) would get some respectability with him coming in.

* Why are we elated ?

Rahul Dravid has been included in the 30 player long list for the Champions Trophy that would happen in September ’09. We are extremely happy that he at least made it to the long list. Probably, a step forward towards a respectable farewell, for this deserving servant of Indian cricket.

The legend of Cheeka: An urban legend?

by Bored Member

It was the good old days in the late 80's from my memory. Srikanth was dropped from the national team for a while. He was the butt of all the cricketing jokes in every way gleefully disrespectful from the fans whatsoever. Common lore usually was based on how he is a nothing cricketer who only wildly swings his bat in a vain hope of connecting. Yes, even Srikanth went through a lot of flak from the selectors to the fans when his form deserted him... perhaps on many counts rather unfairly.

With this as the background, the Don Bosco school in Chennai had invited him to be the chief guest for their sports day event. Don Bosco at that time had two promising players in the name of Tanvir Jabber and an another bowler, whose name I cannot recall. Both these guys were already big names in the national junior circuit and their very names was enough to make school kids in the zonal inter-school competition go in a state of panic and outright fear.

So when the event happened, the script was to him coming in as a chief guest and play a couple of deliveries to kick off the school cricket competition. Sure enough, after the standard formalities, Srikanth went to the field to face a few token deliveries to get the crowd going.

First ball: The great fast bowler of the school took a shortened run-up, made a few smart stereotyped laughable quirks to the fielders nearby and bowled the first ball rather casually. Cheeka didn't move his feet, hit it not very cleanly but the ball sailed over the boundary for a six with such ease.

The crowd went berserk.

Second ball: Furious, the bowler went back muttering angrily... Took an extended run-up, more than what he usually does and charged in with all his might. The students held their breath back because that bowler was indeed quick. The bowler let loose a fast and short riser... Cheeka simply danced down the track and hit the bouncer on the up right out of the school compound all the way into the Don Bosco junior school compound across the opposite side of the road! One of the biggest sixes ever seen.

Crowd went ballistic... He smiled and left.

It was the much needed humble lesson every one learned. For the fact, that if someone made it to the national team amidst all common odds, there is a significant untold brilliance, which no common fan can ever know.

While this could well be an urban legend, since your truly was not there to witness this but took a stupid decision to watch a western flick instead on the sly without my parents knowledge and add to that the fact that I was a football buff back then, this incident is still being sung as far as a few days back as this huge urban legend on Srikanth, told over generations from the ones who watched it unfold on that day.

To me, I take it as on that day, there were many who learned a much needed lesson in life, including me.

BCCI is paying the selectors… Huzaa!! ICL is happy

by Bored Member

by Raja Baradwaj

It seems BCCI has decided that paying the selectors means that a good team (without any bias… what an oxymoron!!) would be selected. And the ICL is happy about this development. No, not because BCCI is paying the selectors. It is because Mr. Krish Srikanth is going to be the chief of selectors.

To understand their happiness we need to rewind a bit and go to the first match (league stage) Chennai Superkings played Rajasthan Royals in IPL. Krish Srikanth was then a star commentator cum a mascot for the Chennai team. Sohail Tanveer, the Pakistani pacer was in the middle of a brilliant spell and so was Srikanth, in the middle of a free flowing commentary session.

Srikanth was so enchanted by Tanveer that he said "Tanveer Jabbar, what a brilliant bowler he is…" Little did Srikanth or for that matter anybody in the commentary team notice this. Perhaps they didn't know who Tanveer Jabbar is. He was a batsman who represented Tamil Nadu in Ranji Trophy in the 90's and the son of Abdul Jabbar who might have played alongside Srikanth, for Tamil Nadu during the 80's. Most of us would have missed this faux pas, but I am sure everyone would agree that our man is bad when it comes to remembering (right) names or putting forth his point of view. And that too when occasion demands.

And yes… I know you guys would have guessed it right as to why ICL is happy with this development. For those who didn't get it… Imagine Srikanth reading a team out like this…

"and T P Singh, Kiran Powar and whaadoucal*… Rajagopalan Satish complete the 15 member squad. The last three are in due to their splendid performance in domestic cricket". I am sure Pawar and Modi have other ideas, they might probably have found a voice over artist to speak (announce the names) out while Srikanth mimes in the background after the selection meetings.

What a performance that would be…

On a completely different note, right from when I was a child I have always been fascinated by this adage "Throw peanuts, get monkeys!!" I realized that there is a converse to this adage which is equally striking and true, "Throw bundles of currency to monkeys, they would still wait for the peanuts". I am sure the people in BCCI know this and have factored this when they selected this bunch of wise men to select.

* That is Srikanth's way of recalling something on air... Used freely on men, animals, place & things, it stands for "What you call"!!

PS: From the same IPL match (Raj Vs Chen) here is another gem from the man… Thanks Bhaskar!!
