Have you been approached by the Mumbai Indians yet?

by Gaurav Sethi

Mumbai Indians' pursuit of Sir Donald Bradman as their mentor-in-chief has never been documented. Unlikely as it sounds, it never happened. The Don’s time was way ahead of the IPL. Countless others such as Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Anil Kumble, John Wright, Jonty Rhodes and Robin Singh were far luckier. Give it a few more years and Bhajji will join his Sachin Paaji on that watchful bench, with Pragyan Ojha as his apprentice. Match after match, these fine cricketers squat in that Mumbai Indians’ dugout with an intensity only an Ambani can afford. The Mumbai bench extends to old faithfuls Sunny bhai and brother Ravi in the com box. There’s Nita bhabhi and her sons, and on occasion Mukesh bhai too. And what better if the match is at Wankhede. We are family.

On the field, the Mumbai Indians are stuck in a time warp – after years, there’s still a plan underfoot to eke out a return on investment from Kieron Pollard. For years he batted so low, you’d think he was being saved for the IPL after party. And when he did surface, so did the bouncer or a spinner with guile. In between there were petrified IPL virgins sacrificed on the altar of Pollard the match winner. In 2010, Michael Holding said, "Pollard in my opinion is not a cricketer". Since his international debut in 2007, Pollard is yet to play a single Test. By the look of it, it’s doubtful he ever will. Once retired, he too may find himself on the MI-bench.  Position – Catching coach. Key areas – Acrobatic catch, the dodgy ones on the boundary. Additional responsibilities – how to sledge Australians, especially Shane Watson. Overheard saying, “My moves are better than Dwayne’s”.
Lasith Malinga went easy on his Sri Lanka career, retiring from Test cricket so he could be called the world’s best death bowler in a local league. To extend his IPL career, Malinga could play even fewer matches or none at all. Having captained Sri Lanka, an appointment as the Ceylonese Ambassador on the MI bench appears likely. It’s another thing that apart from Angelo Mathews and Thisara Perera there are no Lankans in the IPL. So what if Perera doesn’t play, there are still two MI vs. DD matches for Malinga to pen his "Sri Lankans in the IPL diary". Perhaps even a chapter on MI’s match in Chennai – titled ‘No Sri Lankans in the IPL diary’.  Additional responsibilities – On your toes & off-your-yorker coach and how to mysteriously smile while being smashed around. Overheard saying - “For me, MI stands for Malinga Indians”.
Aaron Finch’s indifferent World Cup run is leading to an even more indifferent IPL run. Form-is-fickle coach for Finch. A largely philosophical assignment, he will speak of his record breaking 156 that was preceded by three single digit scores and followed by yet another such score, only to be followed by two half centuries...there, you get the drift. Position – Hit out or get out coach. Additional responsibilities – help under nourished, uncapped Indians put on weight – Eat right or get out coach. Overheard saying – nothing.
Corey Anderson, signed on by the Indians after he knocked the fastest ODI century, has mastered the what-am-I-doing here look. Will be Finch’s assistant in the philosophical class. Will also hold special classes for sacrificial virgins (young Indian bowlers in the IPL) on how not to bowl at all by being picked as a flash bat who can bowl a bit. Additional responsibilities – how to keep your chin up and out. Overheard saying – nothing.
Unmukt Chand: English speaking coach. Will introduce the players to the Oxford Dictionary and St Stephen’s college. Additional responsibilities – social media. Overheard saying – stuff nobody understands.
Parthiv Patel: Will screen The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. After the screening will stand there as Display No. 1 and a much younger Display No. 2 barely five minutes later. Additional responsibilities – are you kidding, someone so young? Overheard saying: “Mummy!”
Harbhajan Singh: Once retired, he will sit next to Sachin paaji. They will laugh. Not since VVS and Cheeka will there have been such levity in an IPL dugout. In inner circles it will be rumoured that his position is that of Mental Mentor or MIMM – Mumbai Indians Mental Mentor. Additional responsibilities – lifting, slapping, clapping, other mundane tasks. Overheard saying: “Teri ma ki” or “Monkey” or “Maan ki" or "thank you, Sachin”
Rohit Sharma: Talent Scout. Will solely work on himself. Will continue to scout for hidden talent within. Will spend time behind closed doors with Shastri’s booming voice. Additional responsibilities – to pout. Overheard saying – “Thank you, Ravi!”

From MI to MIK - Mumbai Indians (Keepers) #IPL7PervView

by Gaurav Sethi

Why Dinesh Karthik was not retained by the Indians is a mystery – he could have been the standby wicketkeeper for the other five in the squad.

Ben Dunk(26), CM Gautam(27), Ambati Rayudu (28), Aditya Tare(26), Sushant Marathe (28) are the five keepers on board.

At 28, Karthik also falls into the favoured age grouping of MI keepers, 26-28.

But Karthik was picked by his old team, the Delhi Daredevils, who prefer buying their discards (Ross Taylor’s in too) just so that they remember why they didn’t retain them in the first place.

But this is not about Delhi and Mumbai, this is Mumbai vs. Mumbai.

As always, Mumbai’s dugout outclasses those off the bench – SRT, Kumble, John Wright, Anita Ambani and the numerous kids she will pose with.

What does MI have other than their five wicketkeepers?

Rohit Sharma. Captain. Defending Champion. Pout-face. Dot balls on top will be vital in playing out the power play without taking undue risks. Followed by a brainfade in over 6.2, batting on an accomplished 28 (26), 1 6, 3 4s. Is best suited for four, but will open. But he’s captain, should bat at four, this is not Team India.

There’s Pragyan Ojha, who is now resigned to not playing for India again, yet again.

Ojha has played 6 T20Is – how he squeezed those many can only be attributed to Bhajji taking off for his recording duties.

He played these games between June 2009 – June 2010.

The rise of Ravindra (a.k.a Jadeja) ended whatever faint hopes Ojha might have had; and unless he can quickly acquire a tag as flash as Sir, say Menial, this could be it.

Also, ever since VVS retired, Ojha has lacked the same deranged motivation in his running.

Ojha, who should be MI’s strongest spinning link, could go missing this season.

Which leaves us with Harbhajan Singh. Yes, he’s still playing cricket.

Michael Hussey will open the batting, and I envisage, the Mathew Hayden of old (make that very old) in his last season making a guest appearance – he could also be possessed by Ponting’s last Waltz last year.

There’s Malinga, who if he’s not captaining, and not taking orders from others, will not be able to dish out Yorker-Fries outside off that even The Greatest IPL Player Of All Time, Dhoni, was unable to counter. To err is Divine.

Zaks, if he’s back from the French Riviera again, will look leaner yet again. He will play initially, and half way through the season he won’t.

Corey Anderson and Keiron Pollard of reputations so great, the IPL will bow before them.

How Corey Anderson goes will decide MI’s season, or maybe it won’t, but I think it could. He should bat no lower than four, ideally at three.

MI though, has in the past been reluctant to bat Pollard anyway higher than eight, though I recall he did come in at seven once, but had to return for a photo-shoot.

Hell, Santokie may not get a game. But Bumrah could, and with that mad-hatter action, will be the best thing for MI this season.

The Playing XI: (batting order)
1 Michael Hussey
2 Rohit Sharma
3 Corey Anderson
4 Ambati Rayudu
5 Pollard
6 Tare / Gautam / Marathe*
8 Zaks / Bumrah / Shreyas Gopal
9 Bhajji
10 Malinga
11 Ojha

*Could play away games too.

MI won't win this season. They don't have a reason.

Sri Lankan players to "Work From Home" for England tour

by Bored Guest

Sri Lankan players are awaiting a response from the Sri Lankan Cricket Board on their proposal to allow them to "Work from Home". The proposal; which the Lankan cricketers claim has the backing of the PCA; is viewed by many in the World of Sport as a breakthrough that will spark innovation and productivity of sportsmen the world over.

Telecommuting is not an entirely new concept. For example in the US 40% of the workforce has telecommuted at least portions of their jobs as software programmers, call center operators and political campaign workers. Believers of telecommuting often site this as the only viable "going green" option with immediate, quantifiable, near term benefits to costs and the environment.

How exactly this model will work for the Sri Lankan cricketers on their upcoming tour of England has left many experts and fans perplexed, if not mildly amused.

Lasith Malinga, who is nursing an injury by playing for the IPL franchise, the Mumbai Indians, is the architect behind the proposal. Asked how he can play for a privately owned franchise while asking to be rested from Tests that Sri Lanka is scheduled to play in England, Malinga said, "Its part of the rehabilitation"

Lasith Malinga, chose to focus on the benefits of telecommuting to cricketers, especially in the age of IPL. "Look with telecommuting you can play in the IPL and play for your country. You won't have situations like Chris Gayle, where the poor guy is forced to play in the IPL instead of his country. You won't have to embarrass the BCCI by calling your players before the IPL finals to play side games on the England tour"

But isn't telecommuting for people who work from home? he was asked...

"Well IPL is our home". He added quickly.

"Look doctors can operate on their patients remotely, choirs are sung virtually over the Internet, software gets developed by people working from home. So why can't cricketers get to play remotely. This way we can play the IPL finals and show up for the first Test in Cardiff on Day 4 and play the rest of the game in person; after telecommuting for the first 3 days"

But where is the technology to support this?

"Look at the DRS...." he added

"Don't we have a DRS with no hot spot, snick-o-meter, reliable ball tracking technology and common sense in Billy Bowden? Why should lack of technology be a roadblock for my proposal? If we can implement the DRS using basically just "slow motion" - a technology invented in the 1930s, surely we can allow cricketers to telecommute using Video Conferences"

On closer observation it was obvious that
Lasith Malinga’s stiff knee had nothing to do with cricket.

Looks like we lost the battle but won the war - 1

by Gaurav Sethi

In spite of themselves, India beat Sri Lanka, the finals’ jinx, sweat soaked shirts, short-circuited uppers, weak limbs, weaker hearts. Sri Lanka tried their darndest but they couldn’t beat the odds.

It was a weird game. Not so much India vs. Sri Lanka as SRT vs. SL.

First they sent in the explosive RDX (Rahul Dravid) to open the innings, take first strike. At that point I was hoping to watch him keep wickets again. While we’re at it, let’s make him the wallflower instead of The Wall.

Then of course, opportunity knocks, and MSD’s in at 95/1, 17th over. Where were you the previous night, sunshine – ok, that was chasing under lights.

YS makes it at 2/205 to be teased by Malinga outside off. Forget the runs, he was on a blind date with a very bad boy. He wanted to get out, but somehow stayed in.

Then another masterstroke, picking Yusuf Pathan and batting him before Raina. He did not disappoint with 006. Once he makes his 7th duck, he’ll be a Batting Bond.

In the 49th came the make-shift opener-replacement for DKNY, the stop-gap opener Virat Kohli. By then of course Yuvraj was a man again.

Somewhere in between RDX ran for SRT. On the sidelines I might add.

B the moment of the match

Mumbai playing Chennai

16.2, Hayden facing up to Malinga

Hayden shuffles and gets ready for a reverse sweep / slog, to realize the ball is a bit short and is right outside his leg stump.

The shot he played in the end shall be shot of this IPL

It was a not so handsome, late nudge on to the fine leg which was more like a conventional late cut of the right hander

That was my effort, trying to describe the shot Hayden played, do feel free to add yours in the comments section.

miracles do happen...

by Bored Member

..and so malinga is back to doing what he does best...bowling his hurt out...

"The president introduced me to Dr Eliyantha White. He works with supernatural powers and herbs," Malinga said. "I don't know what he does and how he does it but it works. I am very grateful to him and the president." The treatment lasted five days and the pain disappeared. Malinga was fit to start his training.
