RDX: 200 catches can wait, we’re still in 50 hundreds’ heaven

by Bored Guest

Sorry, the headline was a slip. Playing with the young lot, I’ve learnt to lighten up a bit. I even read Ishant’s comics sometimes, but only on the condition that he reads the prologue of my book. Once when I made him do that, Sachin laughed, “forget prologue, he only knows Hum Log”. That was ironical, because I don’t think Ishant has ever watched Hum Log (we people) That was a different time.

But that’s what slip catching is all about – Hum Log! There is the ball, the bowler, the batsman who edges it, the umpire who has to raise his finger, and lastly, yours truly, the slip fielder.

Bhajji asked me, how does it feel to take 200 catches – “Better than Catch 22” I replied. He nodded, and in all seriousness asked me, “what was Catch 22 like, did you drop it?” We all laughed, that’s the thing about Bhajji, he will always take the joke to the next level, even if he doesn’t get it.

There was a joke in the dressing room that Australia will now want Mark Waugh who has 181 catches to return so he can challenge my 200 catches.

MSD insisted that I should keep wickets now, so he can concentrate on the captaincy.

As a slip catcher you must have big hands and little feet. Knowing ballet is an added advantage.

Today’s catch was special, not because it was the 200th, but I finally felt I had done something in this test match. Later when I saw the replays, I was zapped how I hugged Bhajji. Bhajji said to me, “you are now a Punjabi, showing your emotions”.

To which I replied, “Teri…” There was a stunned silence, and then a drunken roar of laughter.

Somehow I can’t sleep tonight. Think I’ll catch sheep.

I am Buchanan

by RajaB

Yesterday we saw our favorite team, the apple of every IPL watcher's eye - KKR lose yet another match. It could have been a close affair had KKR managed to take some catches (some at least) and had fielded good enough to save a couple of 10's of runs they leaked.

And so we have two brilliant ideas, to ensure that missed catches and leaked runs don't tilt the balance much, towards the other side.

1) If a fielder has to cover more than 4.5 yards of ground going for a catch, then he should be permitted to take the catch after a bounce (strictly one bounce only for foreign players, for Indians we may consider two bounces)

2) If the fielder covers more than 8.5 yards to field the ball, then only half the runs taken should be counted (E.g) If you run one, then you'll get 0.5 runs. We think this half run phenomenan would revolutionise cricket.

Imagine a team losing a match by half a run !! That day is not too far.

Citi moments of failure

by Gaurav Sethi

Franklin's dropped catch, McCullum's dropped catch, O' Brien's dropped catch. The citi never sleeps. And still no plans of a bailout. What would we do without a world record catcher in the rye? Drop a few more catches.

Rahul Dravid record-catch party

by Gaurav Sethi

I was very happy for him, and so was he, for a change. He smiled. The players gathered around him, as they do around a big buffet at the end of a tough day’s play. He smiled. That was something when each player spoke to him. The last time Dravid had all the players so close to him was when the knives were out and Chappell was still in. As each player spoke, Dravid appeared to explain the science behind a catch and how he doesn’t understand when players say they prefer to take natural catches. Think they even touched him. But I can’t say for sure it was very early in the morning. However, I'm certain he smiled.

Toilet seat man takes what a catch

by Gaurav Sethi

Neil McKenzie caught Katich. Toliet seats the world over will be raised for a minute in tribute.

You can put words to the catch, but that would be doing McKenzie a huge disfavour. Just go ahead and catch it in the highlights, it's bound to be all over the place.

Fielding at Gully, McKenzie can now have an entire school of cricket named after this catch - it will aptly be called Gully cricket.

Anyway, if you're the kind of viewer that prefers reading about catches rather than catching them, here goes:

8.5
Steyn to Katich, OUT, stunning catch! And i mean stunning! Steyn pitches it just back of a length outside off stump, Katich opens the face and tries to steer the ball away but thats a brilliant effort from McKenzie at gully, diving horizontal to his right and plucking the ball with one outstretched hand, then tumbling to the ground before his team-mates and the fortunate bowler mob him

You read stunning, brilliant effort, none which do justice to the catch. So go sit on a toilet seat, and catch the catch.
