sp's moment of the opening match...

by straight point

what else but the sight of CHE'teshwar pujara... walking down at the fall of the first wicket...

though he has been with kolkata knight riders since the beginning... it took him three years to make his debut... such is the cricketing expertise of kkr's think tank...

though he didn't last long... but the way he played some shots covering the prodigious swing vaas was getting early on was the sign of how good a batsman he is... the bat was coming straight covering not only the line but the late inswing and still he made them count for runs!

if only he had lasted longer we would have witnessed the heady cocktail of aesthetic pleasures of sound batting mixed with the unorthodoxy of t20 cricket...

i wish now that they have selected him... kkr think tank doesn't confine him to the dugout... and would give him a fair run... and as some say... his right to fail...

Achettup's Moment of The Opening IPL Match

by achettup

It was a strange match, exciting but not thrilling and almost anticlimactic towards the end. It was an upset alright, but perhaps more because Deccan threw the game away than Kolkata winning it. There were plenty of dropped catches, sixes and dot balls and excellent patient innings from Angelo Matthews and Owais Shah before they plundered 70 odd runs off the last five overs. Then there was Gilly's assault... there were the cringe-inducing strokes by the rest of the Deccan batsmen... But the moment that stood out to me is one we should all be sick of...

Just how much cricket have India and Sri Lanka played in recent times? I've lost count but "too much" seems like a fine alternative. And then when Chaminda Vaas dismissed Tiwari, it seemed we were seeing Ind vs SL all over again... retro this time with Vaas bowling to Ganguly in the first over of the match... and three balls later Vaas got his man for a duck... but for a change I didn't feel like kicking the tv or the sofa or whatever... it didn't matter, and it was nice in a way to see Ganguly dismissed by Vaas and not feel affected one little bit by it... maybe even letting a small smile break on my lips.

IPL Teams with Supersubs

by Mahek

Dale Steyn might think the IPL was a paid holiday but it's time the IPL franchises found a way to earn the return on their overseas investments. It's time to bring back the supersub so that the owners don't throw money at cricketers who do nothing but carry drinks and give interviews during games. The crowds will get to see better cricket and that's always good for the game, isn't it?.

Imagine this: The Delhi Daredevils are bowling first. They have Tillakaratne Dilshan, AB de Villiers, Daniel Vettori and Dirk Nannes in the XI. Nannes takes 3/13 off his 4 overs. His night is over and in comes David Warner who scores a 50 off 34 balls. You've given a chance to Warner to display his ability. The crowd has seen some savage batting and goes home happy while the pseudo-nationalists are happy you've adhered to the 4 overseas players in the XI rule.

Similarly, you could have Ricky Ponting replacing Ajantha Mendis for the Kolkata Knight Riders. Matthew Hayden can beat the opposition bowlers to a pulp before Muttiah Muralitharan spins a web around them. The Deccan Chargers would unleash Castro on those capitalists from Mumbai before Gibbs thrashes the "Indians" all over the park. Talk about innovation.

What now Lalit Modi?

by Gaurav Sethi

Deccan Chargers have been knocked out of the Champions League by Trinidad & Tobago. What remains of the IPL are the Delhi Daredevils and the Bangalore Royal Challengers.

The two teams will play each other in the Super 8s on Saturday, 17th October. Incidentally, that is also Diwali. The game starts at 8.00 pm, Diwali prime-time.

That should wreak havoc with the TRPs and spectator turnout. What now, Lalit Modi - you want to defer Diwali?

Raj moment of the Finals

by Bored Guest

Match over. Triumphant arms have been raised. Perfunctory leaping over the captain’s hips has been completed. The lap of honour is in progress. And then you spot the winning captain racing frantically across the turf to a no-name DC administrator, who is running around in a trance. Gilly taps him on his shoulder – but the man is too lost in celebrations to realize. Gilly taps again. No response. Gilly overtakes him, grabs his shoulders and attention, and embraces him triumphantly. Heartwarming moment – Gilly, I have never believed your walker stance, never believed your gentleman image, and you did prove me right with your moaning book, and reprehensible comments on Sachin but on this day, with this gesture, you won me over. All’s forgiven, Gilly. It helps that you took my ‘home’ team Hyderabad to a trophy triumph from the depths of last season. If only you could motivate Laxman the same way you have motivated the other lads, and get him to give us his Indian summer, literally, next year in the IPL, I will tap your shoulder, metaphorically, for a metaphorical embrace just as you did with the DC official yesterday.

Q moment of IPL Final

by Q

Anil Kumble bowling Adam Gilchrist.

Manish Pandey taking that awesome catch or diving across the field to stop a boundary.

Adam Gilchrist stumping Virat Kohli.

Harmeet Singh's catch at fine leg.

Anil Kumble dishing it out to Robin Uthappa.

There were many, as should have been, in the final.

One moment though was not called for - Modi shaking his leg with Katrina Kaif, Shiamak Davar, and Akon.

That was surely not needed.

But one that was and stood above all for me.

Adam Gilchrist, arms wide open, looking up at the skies, and screaming away!

Go Chargers Go!

Geek Gods did not shine on Anil Bhai

by Gaurav Sethi

The final was divided into two parts: Gilli's wicket and the rest of the winding road. BRC won it too early, and slacked it out after that. Not Jumbo, he was like the man on the moon who wanted to be on Jupiter. But the Geek Goods did not shine on him. And for once, Jumbo looked more a dude than a geek. On the ball, button, but how long can you carry a team on your shoulders, even on those broad shoulders.

Manish Pandey - India's Latest Star?

by Q

An unbeaten 114 in a crunch game, followed up with a 48 in a semi final has caught the imagination of a number of people.

After his unbeaten 114 against the Deccan Chargers, I did some digging on Manish Pandey, which I wrote about here.

As it figures, there's more to it than just that.

His 114* was not only the 1st century by an Indian in the IPL, it was only the 2nd century by an Indian in all Twenty20 cricket. Rohit Sharma is the other one.

What's more is that it is the highest score by an Indian in all Twenty20 cricket.

That is some achievement.

Particularly when its his first ever hundred in all forms of the game at the first class level.

In 5 first class matches, 6 List A games, and 12 Twenty20 matches, before the one against Deccan, Pandey's highest score was 69.

In his last 2 innings of 114* and 48, Pandey scored more runs than he had in his 10 Twenty20 innings before that.

Royal Challengers Bangalore have unearthed a new potential star for India.

Maybe a lot of you in India knew about him before Friday, but the IPL has in all probability provided a launch platform like no other for Manish Pandey.

What do you reckon then - has a new star for India been born?

NC moment of what match was that

by Gaurav Sethi

They stitched his fingers back but overlooked the heavy machinery. Jatman decided to counter the Gilli slaughterhouse with his first over in IPL2, within the powerplay. That after the quicks had been rammed within an inch of their lives – there was this little matter that Jatman was protecting Dilshan and Mishra, who unlike him were not IPL bowling virgins. But Jatman wanted to bleed. And so he did. Bloody fool indeed!

B the moment of the match

by RajaB

Bangalore playing Deccan

Such an important match it was touted to be. Many people wrote many things about what these two teams should do to qualify. And most importantly keep Punjab at bay.

But then as luck would have it, Mangal Pande... err.. Manish Pande scored an amazing century and the so called test team, reached a (what seems like winning) 170. This not withstanding a scrum half-like fielding performance by Deccan's Gibbs assisted by Symonds.

All that said, my moment of the match would be that second when Kumbles called Virat Kohli to bowl.

Having seen Mr Kohli's record just when he had hit RP all over the park in over no 20, I was amazed he was called in to bowl.

Is it arrogance ?

Or wisdom ?

So far it looks like wisdom, but who knows...

In T20 I am told the wisemen speak after 40 overs and 15 minutes

Have they won yet??

RP Singh to Manish Pandey.

Straight powerful hit down the ground.

Four!

NO!, who's that?

Its a bird, its a plane, its superman, no its Herchelle Gibbs!

Gibbs diving across, stopping the ball, and passing it to Symonds who throws it back to the bowler.

That was not the moment.

RP Singh's expression at the fielding hustle was!

What a beauty.
