How Pakistan paid a heavy price for its victory celebrations
Where does Younis Khan figure in the list of Pakistan batting greats
Twenty-nine centuries and an average of over 53 in Tests. Where do you think Younis Khan figures in the list of Pakistan's batting greats? I think unrelenting Javed Miandad was the greatest that I've seen, he swung many a game, so did Inzamam-ul-Haq, a complete batsman in all senses. Mohammad Yousuf was perhaps one of the most technically sound batsmen they've ever had. The elegant stroke-making of Zaheer Abbas, one hears, made him a joy to watch. Younis makes it to the top-5 with the weight of sheer numbers and consistency. Saeed Anwar maybe just misses out on the top-5 despite his numerous match-winning knocks and effortless strokeplay.
Whatever Happened To Good Old Fashioned Retiring?
Not anymore. Nowadays, retirements are all about making some statement or the other. If you do want to announce your retirement, you either do it in one format or two, to prolong your career in the other. Its like a caveat you need to add for feeling bad that you're walking away from the game. And of course some people simply can't walk away, even when they clearly are well past their best. In fact, they feel so bad about it that they dismiss all talk about the "r" word. Really.
And then there is the most common use of retirements today, employed mostly by ex-Pakistani skippers and the odd Bangladeshi. These "I'm retiring... for now... but I could be back... in fact, I'd like to be back... in fact only an idiot wouldn't *want* me back... but since you're all acting like idiots... I'm retiring and making you all look like bigger idiots, ha!" Younis Khan, Mohammed Yousuf, Shahid Afridi... often they end up captaining a series not much later and then they're sacked, rinse, cycle, repeat. We could probably classify these as neo-retirements (unfortunately not the TV channel).
Then we have the never-ending retirements. Players who just can't get enough of a farewell. I can't even remember the number of times Flintoff has announced his retirement at some different stage or the other. Or Ganguly. Or Muralitharan. Or Warne. At a test/ODI. Then in T20s. Then in first class cricket. Then in a T20 league. And all the same tributes get written all over again. I blame Steve Waugh for starting the glorious never-ending retirements.
The evolution of retirements from being an honest admission of not having it in you to continue to staging a protest or demanding a fitting farewell perhaps only competes with the change in quality of cricket bats.
Younis explains his relationship with Yousuf...
The Pak-SAF Freak Show.
On the surface, Pakistan are playing South Africa. Hang in till the last ten overs, Pakistan start to play themselves. Then around the last 7-8 overs, South Africa start playing themselves. The series is Pak vs SAF vs SAF vs PAK vs PAK. Who needs a triangular, these teams are two faced.
1. The Run-out: Haider plays back to Parnell. Runs a few paces down, and as it should be Haider’s call (but isn’t), Wahab runs more than a few paces down. There is time for a mid pitch conference, instead Parnell runs Wahab out. Wahab looks so sad, if only he could see the run out, he’d laugh too. (And so we tweeted: Next, they should try and run before the ball has been delivered. Even better when the bowler is gng back to his mark.
2. The Run-out that wasn’t: The tailenders go for a second which wasn’t. Ball thrown at bowler’s end, Steyn collects, with his back to the runner, responds to AB’s call, and instead of knocking the bails at his end, about turns and throws to keeper. If only he could see the replay, appears he does. He resembles an annoyed Wahab.
3. Brain fade that wasn’t: It was just Afridi. Just over a 100 to get, 18+ overs to get them in. Boom Boom down the wicket to hit Botha outta the ground. Yes, he’s the captain.
4. Return of the other Y: So the other, other Y has gone away. The world is not big enough for both Ys. Today, Younis hung in long enough to face more balls than Afridi has faced in his entire ODI career. He even made it to the Man of the match. He didn’t smile much, spoke in Urdu. Refreshing.
5. Return of the other captain: Smith was setting the field. Appears he was captain. The other day he wasn’t, Botha was. It is obvious now, both teams complement each other – but not themselves.
6. Gibbs takes his lance out – he sticks it into Smith and his gang. As a result, Smith, Kallis, AB, continue to think about weird excerpts from Gibbs’ book (most expensive shag) when they really should keep their eyes on the ball. Catch dropped. Demands for a new tech called Speech Blurb Cloud find voice.
7. Steyn takes his place – goes for 79 of 10. And that run out.
8. Shoiab Akhtar takes his place – scores 0 runs again to see Pak through. In the 2nd ODI he faced 1 ball, in the 4th, no ball. He did not however receive a free hit.
And so we tweeted: Gng by the freak cricket they produce, SAF and Pak should be part of each others' domestic tournaments.
A day in the life of Younis Khan
While MoYo makes his mark in cricket, Younis makes the bed tea. Dazzling in an all-white kurta pajama (to remind him of the glory days), he wakes early, smile plastered on face, gotta be positive, and opens the door for the milkman.
Milkman: Younis Bhai, I have often wondered how you can be ever so smiling
Younis takes this remark personally, and walks away, as he often does with his cricket. But then again, as he often does in cricket, he returns smiling – this time, packed with a reply
Younis: Milkman bhai, I have often wondered if you learn your English from Goodness Gracious Me!
Milkman: 1000 apologies, Younis Bhai, it is from videos of Mind your Language…but tell me,Younis Bhai, how will you play for Pakistan again?
Cut to Ijaz Butt’s office
Butt: Younis, we just had a special screening of The Dark Knight for all the PCB – and you know what they’re saying – Younis is like that joker, he’s always smiling – he is evil!
Younis starts to sing Chris Rea’s You must be evil, all this while still smiling
Younis: You must be evil…
Butt as he often does, takes it personally, and accuses Younis
Butt: You are evil…how will you play for Pakistan again?
On his way back home, Younis picks some naans and mutton curry from the local restaurant. While doing so, the owner enters into conversation
Owner: Always so cheerful, always smiling – Younis, let me tell you this much – you must do something, burn Ijaz Butt effigies, retire from cricket, grow a beard, marry an Indian…but not smile
Younis throws the food in disgust and walks away, as he often does in cricket – only to return, smiling.
Owner: If you keep going away, how will you play for Pakistan again..
Younis Khan at home, watches as the kids play cricket – he asks to be included in a team
Kid: What, when the team if being made you always go away, then you want to play in the last minute
Kid2: Younis Chacha, forget playing with us, will you play for Pakistan again?
Younis smiles, and turns away...but as he turns away tears start to roll down…and it starts to rain.
And this song starts to play: The rain falls down...on last year's man
And Younis fades to black.
Why has Mohammad Yousuf been picked instead of Younis Khan

Who Wears The Pants In This Family?
So who decides if Pakistan needs a strong middle order? On cricinfo, they've taken pains to name all the people who were involved in that decision making meeting:
The PCB said in a statement that Kamran Akmal would be Butt's vice-captain for the Tests in England and that the matter concerning the inclusion of Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf in the team was also discussed at a meeting but was deferred.
Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, convened a meeting on Saturday involving the team management and senior players to discuss the way forward following Afridi's decision to retire from Tests. The meeting was attended by the team manager Yawar Saeed, coach Waqar Younis, associate manager Shafqat Rana, Salman Butt, Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal and Umar Gul.
Besides having one Butt too many in that meeting, there seems to be a peculiar mix of "senior" players in the meeting. I don't recall, what position did Shoaib Mirza bat at again in the previous test? Oh, thats right, they played a débutante ahead of him! As a "senior" player of considerable new "influence", his opinion on team harmony must have been crucial. This after a stats piece showed just how dependent the team is on a strong middle order. "matter deferred" it seems, at this rate soon your cricket will be "deferred" too Butthead...
Oye, welcome back you useless SOBs
If you were Younis Khan, MoYo, Shoaib Mailk, where would you be now?
One foot on Jacob's ladder
And one foot in the fire
And it all goes down in your mind
Living at the bottom of the stairs in your life
Never a smile knocking on your door
The air is blue and so are you
Prehistoric monsters on the floor
Last verse of your last song
And God don't hear dead men
The end of the line is in your mind
And you'll be staying in
Shahid Afridi's plea to seniors works
and return to play for Pakistan cricket very soon...
Mentally Retarded Pakistani Cricketers
Intikhab Alam - I felt that they are mentally retarded people. There is a mental problem with our players. They don't know how to wear their clothes and how to talk in a civilized manner.
A peaceful protest against the banning of Pakistani cricketers.
The return of Shahid Bhai, Shahid Bhai - The Big Ban
Bent back, almost parallel to the ground, much like Quasimodo, Kreeper runs into Shahid Bhai’s household –
Shahid Bhai lunching, seated at the head of the table, surrounded by Fans with banners that read Boom Boom! + Afridi for PCB captain + Shahid Bhai! Shahid Bhai! you’re 2 sexy and other assorted suck-ups. Behind Shahid Bhai is a babe, a hark back to the Mughal times – she is feeding him grapes..
Subtitles: Grapes are sour, puss…
He spits a grape out for his pussy cat – and then throws a roti in Kreeper’s direction, who pounces dog-like at it
The fans at the table start shouting for Shahid Bhai, flashing posters, howling, as if he is coming in to bat. Shahid Bhai gets up stylishly albeit slowly, spits another grape at puss, flicks his hair back, hurls another roti at Kreeper (which he pounces at). He stands in front of the window so the sunlight lights him up, he then poses like only he can, arms outstretched as if he’s taken another wicket. And then he breaks his silence
His fans at the table go delirious.
Song: It’s bye bye Mr MoYo bhai…Bye bye Mr Younis bhai…and good old bhais were drinking risky and hai singing this will be the day that I’ll be banned…this will be the day that I will be banned!
Pak Cricket Round Table Conference
Last and final call for Younis Khan.
By now you know that Younis Khan could be on the next flight to Sydney. He’s been on standby ever since the Melbourne test went according to plan, that is abysmally wrong. Younis being a Pak ex-captain was expecting this; he had his bags packed as he heard S&G’s Homeward Bound backwards.
Till tea, fourth day, the test has had only one flow; after tea is when it reverted to a classic Pak test, ebb, flow, ebb and flow, and sometimes flow and ebb.
It was in the post tea session that Younis was put on high alert; he was on call. The smile was back as he patted random travellers and high fived a few youngsters at the Karachi airport. He urged his mobile to ring, a call from MoYo, even his ringtone had been changed to the appropriate, “AHJA AHJA…AAAH!” (come, come…come!)
To be honest, the phone did ring a few times. Each time Younis started to gyrate like some Bollywood nymph, and then just when he was through with his item number, the phone would stop ringing.
Deal is, after a wicket, a partnership had started to develop. The first phone rang at 18/1 when Farhat fell. And as Younis took his time to take the call, Salman Butt and Faisal Iqbal already got into partnership mode.
It is known that MoYo can change his mind abruptly; his shenanigans of calling and then disconnecting, not something new, ask Kapil Dev if you don’t believe me.
Of course Younis called MoYo back, whose ringtone was appropriately “Kabhi haan, kabhi naa” ('times yes, 'times no); as expected MoYo didn’t take the call. Why would he, that’s not the nature of the beast.
And then, Butt played across to one; MoYo was mortified – how could he, this chokada? Padded and set to walk out, MoYo decided to call Younis one more time, and tell him, “Arey, board kar plane, kayamat aah gayi hai yahaan…”
But did he get to tell him? Younis’ phone rang, and how he danced, he knew Butt was gone; he was still enjoying the replay on the giant flat screen, doing his gig, beaming, high fiving random travellers.
Now even though it wasn’t a T20, you still have to get there and bat. Why wasn’t Younis answering – MoYo was going mad. Misbah muttered from behind, “Ja yaar, Ja”
Always being in two minds, MoYo walked with bat, and mobile phone. But that incident the Late Cronje had with the Late Woolmer; ear implants are disallowed; and MoYo chucked his mobile in disgust.
As it wasn’t a 3 Mobile, the sponsors didn’t take the call. Elsewhere, Younis wildly repeated, “Yousuf bhai, Yousuf bhai…bhai??!”
But all he could hear were abusive Aussie kids, and drunken wankers. A rare black sea pearl shaped tear drop appeared, and then disappeared; it was as if Younis had never cried.
Almost ten overs later when Faisal fell, Younis’ hopes rose…MoYo asked for a drink, the drink came, he asked the drink’s boy for his mobile, but the mobile never came.
It was trampled upon by the drinks’ boy, who kept telling his mates, “my feet are talking – strange airport announcement sounds” They thought he was mad.
Fifty four runs and no wickets later, MoYo and Umar Akmal returned, to fight and call another day – Younis meanwhile sits in the Terminal, thinking about that Tom Hanks movie he once saw. Can cricket imitate the movies?
Pakistan's Muddle Order.
In the absence of Younis Khan, none of the so called seniors cared to bat up the order. Instead they were scattered all over the place, waiting for the older ball. That was bored member naked cricket on 28th November. And now what does December 2 bring: Both espnstar and cricket next are harping on about their sources in the team. Not that you can call the Pak side a team.
First neither MoYo nor Shoaib Malik were keen on three, now Misbah's in town, and the holy trinity refuses to bat up the order.
Be wonderful if Inzi could play international cricket again. Together they will form the Great Pakistan Muddle Order. One tight unit: MoYo at four, Malik at half past four, Misbah at quarter to five, and Inzi, back from a nap at five.
Bored Joke: Now you know how Pakistan bats deep.
A third captain in three days.
That’s Pakistan cricket for you. Until day before Younis Khan was skipper. Then yesterday Mohammad Yousuf became captain. And now it’s Shahid Afridi who will captain the team.
Younis was the one day captain. Now it appears he was captain for a day. He stepped down as Pak captains often do, and MoYo was made captain – mind you, not of the one day team, but the test team that sails to New Zealand.
It is still unknown whether MoYo will also captain the ship. Is the ship the Titanic? Between Younis and Yousuf, they make YoYo.
Today it’s your day, tomorrow mine, and so on. It is a well mannered arrangement, very democratic. Once the army takes over it could be different. Remember how Musharraf ran cricket when he was country captain? He was more interested in the cricket than the country.
Rumour had it that his cabinet meetings were across a green top that measured 22 yards. Often when he was incognito, it was said, General is in the yard.
Anyway, on from MoYo and YoYo and Mush, it’s Boom Boom's day today. Pak play New Zealand in a twenty20 in Dubai. Bored Member Bhaskar and Raja be there, Q will wish he was.
Another format, another captain – so it’s Boom Boom today. And on the 4th day they will take a rest from captains, so you think?
If there’s a Hong Kong Super Sixes, a special envoy, one of the Pak backbenchers in China, he’ll be there. And if you’re Pakistani, never know, you could be King for a day. Imagine captaining, MoYo, YoYo, Boom Boom. Ok, don’t.
Vettori to captain Pak now.
Captain, selector, coach, bowler, batsman, spectacle, still not enough for Vettori. But a little much for Younis – it was bad enough skippering MoYo and Boom Boom, then to see this spectacled monster juggle so many roles.
Younis smiled angrily:
“While Aamer and last wicket partnership is happening this Vettori was appealing so much I didn’t like it much and he is putting not good pressure on to us so I am not going to be being captain for the New Zealand test series and if he could can be doing in such a good job let him could be captaining Pakistan team also it is up to him I am not saying anything let him see what he can do”
Basically Younis will not captain the Pak test team to New Zealand. He could still go as a tourist, but not captain. MoYo will be captain in name, meaning, Pak will be headless.
This of course suits Boom Boom and MoYo who never call heads at the toss, but spare a thought for Vettori.
Never one to shy away, Vet is taking Younis’ comment positively. And while he will remain captain for the Kiwis, he will be a Ghost captain for the Pak team.
A big one for fancy dress, Vet as ghost captain pulled out his Halloween outfit as the three witches from Macbeth. "Very apt, he’s such a multi-tasker, he is, isn’t he, oh, yes he is" – echoed the three witches in union. Along with the usual, “fair is foul, foul is fair” drivel.

Why Sidhu should be India's next fielding coach
It's not easy to create vacancy when laying off is of the essence. But BCCI manages to do it with elan.
How? Simply by laying off!
So here rolls the head of Robbing-turned-Robbed Singh and there rolls the same of country's most famous luggage-handler Venkateswara's Prasad.
To sum up the situation, there you have two ready vacancies.
Now while BCCI is free to jolt a retire Supreme Court judge out of his slumber and make him head a head-hunting panel to find the next bowling coach, I would mildly suggest that the irrepressible Navjot Singh Sidhu aka Jonty Singh for the fielding coach's job.
Dub my a loony, call me a Sidhu, but not before you listen to the arguments.
Of course the proposition is fraught with risks of hearing impairments but Sidhu's presence is guaranteed to lift the fitness and fielding levels to such a stratospheric level, from where players would simply refuse to come down.
After all, you can't go home and have your eight hours when all ringing inside your dome is something along this line:
"Oye Guru, you miss a catch and it can be catch 22."
Let me tell you, no judge or participant has survived more than two sessions in any TV shows which had Sidhu under the same roof from where plasters came off every time he laughed.
So if dropping a catch invites a one-on-one session with Sidhu, no right-thinking cricketer – I would go to the extent of including the left-thinking ilk as well – would make that fatal mistake.
Besides, Younis Khan would vouch, it pays to have MPs by your side.
Anyone listening?
Younis fishing in troubled waters
Younis Khan runs away with sympathy. And you can’t grudge him for that.
By and large, parliamentarians generate exactly as much respect as a lamp-post draws from a stray dog. Evidence was not really sought but Jamshed Dasti and his nitwit colleagues in the National Assembly Standing Committee on Sports explain why.
Unfortunately for Pakistan cricket, Younis is not an angel either.
His past will tell you he has a rather ambiguous approach to captaincy. He would not stick his neck out but would not mind it either if somebody serves it on a platter.
Some people have all the luck and Younis led the team to T20 World Cup glory, earning himself a slice of history.
And then his dramatic stepping down not only earned him some precious Brownie points but also a martyr’s stature.
Younis knows the din raised by the National Assembly mad-hatters would die down and PCB has to fall back on him.
Everything timed perfectly, Younis has told PCB to name him captain till 2011 World Cup or just forget it.
So while Ejaj Butt scratched his head bald, you can actually imagine Younis flashing that Cheshire smile. After all it's a win-win situation for him.
